1、 At just 12 years old, Leonardo Nicanor Quinteros is still in middle school, 1. but he has already run his own free school. He helps other children with their studies.
Leonardo loves to study. After seeing some of his classmates trying to keep up at school, he decided to do something about it. Last year, he told his grandmother that he wanted to have his own school. 2. 他要奶奶帮他把学校建在他们家隔壁。She agreed. Today, the free school has nearly 40 students. The boy acts as teacher and headmaster. 3. He is proud that what he does has already made a big difference to many of the children there.
The school is not much to look at. It's made mostly of adobe(土砖) and is pretty small. 4. 但是,在邻居们的帮助下,学校正变得越来越好。Leonardo lives 20 minutes away from his own school. But every day he gets on his bicycle after coming home from school and rides to his own school. He teaches classes on different subjects, like math and grammar. Sometimes, 5. when his students cannot come, he gives the classes at night to make sure they don't get behind on their studies.
Leonardo does his best to help students improve their subjects. Many admit (承 认) that they have improved a lot. “He helped me to pass the tests, now I'm in Third Grade,” one of the students said.

24、 Have you ever had a problem you couldn’t solve? Maybe you went to the store to look for a solution, but came home empty-handed. More and more, when the situation happens, people are creating their own device(设备) as the solution. It’s all part of the Maker Movement (创客运动)—make up of thousands of wise people who make and fix things, rather than buy them in stores. For makers, making some things by themselves is often cheaper and more satisfying than simply buy them in stores.
Thanks to technology, it’s easier than ever to turn a thought into reality. Many makers use the tools just in different ways. For example, Arduino is popular with makers. This open-source mini controller is used to develop all kinds of electronic devices.
Another key piece of technology for maker is 3D printers. You can even use a 3D printer to build your own 3D printer! The usage of these technologies inspires people to be creative. It is clear that Maker Festivals are more and more popular. People come together to experiment (做实验) in the area of art, science, engineering and technology.
What will be helpful for you to become a maker? You need to be creative and willing to play around with some new technologies. You should also want to share your ideas with others. 25、He was the only gray cub(狼崽) of the she-wolf. The other cubs had red in their hair. He was gray like his father. He was the strongest cub. He showed more anger than his brothers and sisters.
He made more noises.
He was a carnivorous animal. He came of a breed of meat-killers and meat-eaters. His father and mother lived wholly upon meat. In his first months of life, he lived on mother’s milk, which was transformed directly from meat. And now, at a month old, when his eyes had been open for but a week, he was beginning himself to eat meat.
There came a time when there was no meat. For many days the cubs did not eat. They were too weak and tired to play. One-Eye, the cub’s father, was killed in the fight over food. Even the she-wolf left the cave to find meat, but there was nothing. One by one, the cubs died. Only the she-wolf and the gray cub were left.
One day the gray cub ran out of the cave to hunt for his own food. He met a weasel(黄鼠狼)of his size. The rat-like animal ran at him and bit his throat. He was nearly dead when the she-wolf arrived just in time to kill and eat it.
The gray cub was not good at hunting yet, and still needed food from his mother. One day, the she-wolf brought him a lynx(猞猁)kitten. While eating, he heard great noise. The kitten’s mother had followed the she-wolf here. The she-wolf and the she-lynx started to fight, and they would fight to the death. The bite was enough to give the she-wolf the chance she needed. The lynx was dead, but the she-wolf was badly hurt. For a week, she did not move. The gray cub had to find food for both of them.
Without his mother to take care of him, he learnt what life was about. Without meat there was no life. Animals had to eat other animals to survive. The law was: EAT OR BE EATEN.

26、 How much do you know about Earth-the planet that we live on? Our knowledge of Earth has been developing since ancient times. However, many puzzles about Earth remain unsolved. Live Science has published a list of the eight biggest mysteries about Earth. Let's look at some of them.
Where did water come from?
When it first came into being 4.5 billion years ago, Earth was a dry rock. So where did all of our water come from? Scientists think that it might have arrived in the form of ice by an asteroid(小行星) from outer space that hit our planet. But this theory has not been confirmed because there is very little related evidence(相关证据)to be studied.
What's in the core(地核)?
Scientists used to study meteorites(陨石)as small examples of Earth, believing that Earth's core was made of iron and nickel(镍). However, a later study in the 1950s proved this way to be wrong because it found that Earth would be too light to provide gravity if its core contained only iron and nickel. Today, scientists continue to bring forward different theories, but none have been confirmed.
How was the Moon born?
Scientists have found that the chemical compositions(成分)of Earth and the Moon are very similar. That suggests that the Moon actually came from Earth. For example, it could be a piece of Earth that separated when Earth hit another planet. It is also possible that when Earth first came into being, it spun(旋转)very fast and threw off enough molten(熔化的)rock to later from the Moon.
【1】What's the story mainly about?
A.How Earth came into being. B.Where Earth's water came from.
C.How the Moon was formed. D.Unexplained mysteries about Earth.
【2】What do we know about where water may come from?
A.Earth's water may come from ice that melted 4.5 billion years ago.
B.Earth's water may come from a small planet that hit Earth.
C.We don't know where water came from.
D.There is lots of evidence that tells us where water came from.
【3】What does the underlined phrase "bring forward" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Check. B.Raise. C.Improve. D.Receive.
【4】Which of the following is TURE according to the passage?
A.Scientists believed Earth's core was made of meteorites.
B.A study in the 1950s proved that Earth's core is made of iron and nickel.
C.The Moon and Earth are made of similar materials.
D.Three possibilities of where the Moon came from are mentioned.
