24、Benjamin Banneker was born a few months before another great American—George Washington. Benjamin was black, but he was not a slave (奴隶). He and his mother and his grandmother were free. Benjamin’s grandmother came from England. In America she got a job and worked for many years to pay for her boat trip across the ocean. After working many years, she saved enough money to buy a farm. Benjamin lived with her for a while. She taught him to read, write and do arithmetic (算术).

25、   Dawn Loggins of Lawndale, N.C., is on her way to Harvard, one of the eight world-famous universities in the eastern US. Nobody encouraged her to study or paid for her special classes. This girl created her own future.

The teen was abandoned by her family last summer, when her parents and two sisters moved to Tennessee.

She found herself homeless and had to spend the night on friends' sofas.

The school bus driver learned about Dawn's situation and invited Dawn to move in with her family. Soon, Dawn had a job at Burns High School. She worked from 6 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. before the first school bell rang. She swept floors and picked up trash again in the afternoons, before diving into her studies in the evenings.

Dawn's hard work paid off (取得成功). She finished school with a 3.9 GPA and scored 2,110 on the SAT. "There were times when I felt like it would be easiest if I gave up," the 18-year-old said. "But it was never in me to give up, because I realized that I was never going to be successful unless I got an education."

27、   Seventeen-year-old Sariah Estrada didn’t expect to receive anything in return when she saved a drowning(溺水的) man on Marianne Beach in Blanchisseuse earlier this year.

However, for her act of kindness, Estrada was awarded the Hummingbird Medal-Bronze for her courage on Monday, September 24. President Paula-Mae Weeks gave the national award to her.

In July of this year, Estrada along with two friends went to the Marianne Beach to relax. Upon leaving the beach, Estrada and her friends noticed a man struggling in the water. She and her friends took actions at once. The teens borrowed a board from some people on the beach and swam to save the man’s life.

She said when they reached the man, he was already unconscious (不省人事的) and they pulled him out of the water on the body board. Estrada remembered what she learned during a life-saving course the week before and quickly started pumping(按压)the man’s chest. After several times, she was successful and the young man’s life was saved.

In an interview, the teenager said while she is thankful for the award, she wasn’t expecting anything in return.

“This award was never expected because I thought of helping someone as an act of humanity( 人 道 ) and never looked for anything in return, but the award is well appreciated. As I reflect on the action I took, I felt as though I could help this person as I have the proper training. The week before it I took part in a basic life support-training course,” Estrada explained.
