25、 It is the second-brightest object in our night sky after the moon. It is one of man's greatest scientific achievements. It's the International Space Station(ISS)that orbits(绕……运行)Earth.
Nov. 20 marks the station's 20th birthday. In 1998, the first piece of the ISS was sent into space. Since then, 230 people from 18 countries have visited it.
Five space agencies(空间站)—those of the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan—worked together to build it. Weighing about 450 tons, it contains many different parts, including labs and solar panels(太阳能板)
Generally, the ISS holds three to six people at one time. Astronauts living there work on a lot of different science projects. The ISS has hosted over 1,500 such projects, according to NASA.
But the station is becoming older. In 2011, Russia announced that the ISS will not be used in 2020 in order to prevent it from becoming dangerous "space junk". But the US later said it would use repairs to make its service life longer(to 2025), the International Business Times reported.
The ISS costs $3-4 billion(21-28 billion yuan)each year. Many have argued that this money could be better spent improving conditions on Earth.
In February, US President Donald Trump announced plans to end support for the ISS by 2025.The US will use its money for other projects, like next-generation rockets and deep-space missions. The Washington Post reported.
What will happen to the ISS after 2025 is unknown. "There are lots of uses," former(前)astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman told NBC News. "Other ISS partners could continue scientific experiments on it. Private companies could turn it into a space hotel."

26、 We were locked in a darkness room, Ned tried to escape from the submarine. I remembered that unforgettable day. When morning came, we saw the monster behind us. After fighting against it, Conseil, Ned and I were thrown into the sea and stood on the monster. We thought it was a giant narwhal. In fact, it was a submarine. A few seconds later, eight men came out and pulled us into this room on the submarine.
Suddenly, two men entered. The tall man was Captain Nemo. He even knew everything we did with him. He asked us to promise not to escape. Finally, we reached an agreement.
Captain Nemo showed me the art gallery with many paintings by famous artists and a museum that contained many thousands of wonderful shells, pearls and other treasures from the sea. I had never seen such a good museum. “What a wonderful ship, it must have cost a fortune” “That’s true!” he replied. “I love it as if it were my child.”
A few days later, Captain Nemo invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. About one hundred savages followed us and tried to come into the ship. Captain Nemo didn’t worry about them. When they put their hand on the rail, they all fell back and ran away. Captain Nemo had put electricity into the rail. Anybody who touched it would receive an electric shock.
One day, he asked me to follow him to another room. A man lay on a bed with a very bad head wound. I looked at it. “What happened?” Captain Nemo answered, “Something broke in the engine. A heavy piece of metal hit his head.” He is going to die soon,” I said. “Nothing can save him.” Tears filled Captain Nemo's eyes, and he asked me to leave.
We sailed through a sea of milk and huge armies of shell sand, sometimes large crowds of sharks. I realized that I did not really want to escape.

27、 Whatever life threw at us each year, our family had one tradition at Christmas: our dog Pepper opened our presents for us.
Last year, everyone made it home for a Christmas get-together. However, it couldn’t feel perfect because Pepper's health was becoming worse. Her life had already been longer than we expected—she was fourteen—and yet her mind was still sharp. Her love for life made us feel better. But her body could not keep up with her mind.
Probably it was Pepper's last Christmas, so we decided to make sure she would enjoy it. On Christmas Eve, we each prepared presents for her.
Soon, Pepper selected her first Christmas gift. She turned the present, just as she was a young dog once more. She pulled the paper off the dog treat before she chewed it slowly. Our family was so happy.
Pepper saw the other three presents, and then turned to Mom as if asking, "May I open another?”
"Go ahead, girl!" Mom encouraged.
For the next few minutes, Pepper opened each of her Christmas presents. While she did, she reminded us of the joy of being together. Our family felt as a whole—not because we were in the same room or city, but because our love brought us together.
Pepper passed away after Christmas. Her peaceful passing made us tearful. Her passing was also a celebration of life, because she gave my family so much love and laughter.
I still treasure(珍惜)Pepper's final Christmas gift. She taught me that no matter where we each spend the holidays, the smallest act of sincere (诚挚的)giving can unite(团结)our family through our love. For me, that knowledge is the longest-lasting gift of all.

28、每空格限填一词,首字母已给。
As a child, I learnt how to make paper masks from newspapers and old magazines. Later I used coloured cardboard. Making masks seemed like a popular art activity. After we made the masks, my classmates and I would put them on and pretend to be people that we were not. By hiding our faces b 【1】 the masks, it did not seem ridiculous to pretend to be an old man or a baby. Immediately, the mask helped us to step into the shoes of a 【2】 character.
A mask allows a person to take on different characters, to pretend and make-believe. Have you ever w 【3】 what the actual face of the clown at the circus is like? The clown’s mask, with white smiling mouth and the round red cheeks, covers whatever the clown r 【4】 looks like.
Masks can also be used to hide what we do not want people to see. For example, the Phantom of the Opera, tells the story of a man who fell in l 【5】 with a beautiful woman. However, one side of his face was ugly and terrible to show anyone. Thus, he wore a mask to hide that part of his face.
Adults, more than children wear different masks every day. These are not actual masks like the types that are made in art classes in schools. These masks refer to the person’s ability to hide his real thoughts and feelings. He will behave in different ways no matter what he is actually feeling i 【6】 . Sometimes, we will put on a happy face even though we are s 【7】 . We wear masks because we do not want people whom we do not know well to know what we are actually thinking and feeling.
