  • 24、Gao Wenqi, 49, owner of a restaurant in Xi’an, Shanxi, started to offer a new service on April 13, 2013: suspended meals (待用快餐). Now many restaurants in China, such as in Henan, Chongqing and Yunnan, have joined the programme.

You can pay 10 yuan for a meal, which should be sold at 16, and leave it at the restaurant. Then other people in need, such as the disabled, the poor elderly or homeless children, can have it without paying.

This idea comes from the cafes (咖啡馆) in Naples, Italy. It’s a tradition that someone there

pays in advance for an extra (额外的) cup or two. Then another coffee-drinker can take them for free.

“The programme is meaningful. It offers help with dignity (尊严),” said Gao. However,

people are worried that someone who is able to pay would also ask for the suspended meals, so there should be rules for this programme.

1According to the passage, this programme may possibly take place   .

2The suspended meals are offered to   .

3The underlined phrase “in advance” in the third paragraph means “   ” in Chinese.

    A. 滞后   B. 预先   C. 优先   D. 胜过

4It’s said that the idea of “suspended meals” comes from   .

    A. Italy   B. the US   C. Canada   D. China

5Which of the following is NOT true?

    A. Someone who is unable to pay can ask for the suspended meals.

    D. All customers must pay for an extra meal at the restaurant.

My name is Jackson. I'm a great reader with good memory. I rememberalmost everything I read. But I don't like to speak in class. When Mr.Knoll announced an oral book report, the idea of going up and having myclassmates staring at me while I talked filled me with anxiety.

As for the date, if the book report was due in two weeks, I would do itright then. Mr. Knoll, though, gave us a month to get the report ready, so Ithought I had plenty of time.

Finally, I chose Fire-Hunter by Jim Kjelgaard. It looked really interesting. I read the first few pagesand then I set it aside. I wasn't worried. I had plenty of time. Then the book got buried in the clutter(杂物)in my room.

Before I knew it, the date of the book report was a week away. Some kids had already finished. Iwas in a panic. I raced home and found the book. Trembling(颤抖),I turned to the back and discoveredthere were 218 pages! I read like crazy

    ending that way."

    I gulped(倒吸气).

"You told a pretty good story”he continued. "The assignment was an oral book report. You did a great job on the oral part’

    "Uh, thanks," I said.

"When you actually finish Fire-Hunter, please come to me and give me the book report’

"Yes, I definitely will," I said. I knew I would never make that mistake again.

  • 26、An Unforgettable Experience

It was the week before Christmas, and there were a lot of people waiting in a long queue at the post office hall. It seemed that no one was moving. I came to the self-service machine where the queue was much shorter.

I don’t like self-service because I’m not good at it. The machine always asks me something I don’t know how to answer. I hate this. I like the old-fashioned way: hand to hand, human to human. I think it is fast and friendly.

The woman in the front of the queue was clicking away at the screen. And the clicks were surprisingly loud. There were many signs of hesitation(犹豫) on her part. I felt sorry for her: The machine could smell fear and nervous. The next person took a long time, too. I breathed deeply. By the time it was my turn, I was so nervous that I felt the beat of my heart.

I felt a growing pressure and I tried to minimized (减少) the seconds between clicks. Finally it was time to slide in a credit card. The machine didn’t take it. “Trying putting it in the other way,” the gentleman behind me suggested. No good.

“I’ve got a different card,” I said, and looked for it in my handbag, beginning to sweat. The machine wanted a PIN (个人密码), but not the one I suggested.

“Start over,” I clicked; I tried the first card again.

Oh, no. I had to start all over again.

“I’m sorry,” I said, looking back, embarrassed. “You all go ahead.”

“Don’t give up,” said the nice man behind me. “Try it again. We’re all friends here, right?”

Seeing smiling on their face, I tried again, clicked carefully and introduce my credit card as if I were presenting it to the queen. Finally, I made it!

I couldn’t have been happier. Everyone burst into applause (鼓掌). Comfort and joy!

  • 27、   As a saying goes, "Your tongue has the power of life and death." This means that your words have power to finally cause things to happen, even life or death.

We may all experience the power of words in our life, even when we were very young. A child is blamed (责备) by teachers or parents, and after that, he might probably think of himself as a bad child. Most kids have that experience. They say it is important to praise children four times for each bad word. Blaming will make things worse, while good words are helpful especially when being in trouble or in need. When we fail the exam, encouraging words from our teachers, parents or even from ourselves make us work harder at our lessons.

Encouraging words can go quite a long way. They lift people up. For example, encouraging words to someone who is sad can help them make it through the day. Words can have a powerful effect on your brain. And it will in turn (相应地) have a great influence on your action.

Everything you do depends on what you choose to do. It's not your parents, your past relationships or your job, but you and only you that are responsible (负责认的) for your dreams. If you have dreams in life, write them down and speak them out. Your words are likely to bring out something amazing.

【1】From the first paragraph, we can know that "your tongue" means ________.

    A.what you say

    B.what you hear

    C.what you see

【2】A child may feel ________ after being blamed by teachers or parents.

    A.relaxed

    B.happy

    C.sad

【3】When students fail exams, _______ can make them work harder on their lessons.

    A.blame

    B.encouragement

    C.experience

【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.We can only experience the power of words after growing up.

B.Our action can be greatly influenced by words.

C.Our parents are responsible for our dreams.

【5】The passage mainly tells us ________.

    A.action speaks louder the words

    B.easier said than done

    C.words are powerful
