六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   In this age of Facebook and Twitter, we are all supposed to have hundreds of friends. But in fact most of us have just two close friends — down from an average(平均水平) of three 25 years ago, a study says.

Researchers (研究者) say there is no need to worry about that. Instead, they say that while some of us may be getting “more vulnerable (脆弱的)”, many are becoming better at deciding who is their close friend.

The result seems unexpected. Because a lot of young people are trying to make as many “friends” as possible on the Internet.

According to Facebook, the average user usually has 130 friends, but many of these are people who are known by accident or people the user will never meet in real life.

But the researcher, Mr. Brashears says, although the circle(圈子) of friends is getting smaller, which may make us more vulnerable, we’re not as “lonely” as the result shows.

For his study, Mr. Brashears did a survey in more than 2,000 adults aged 18 and older. He found that, modern discussion networks have been smaller in size. It is the same as other researchers’ findings, but few people have become lonelier.

Researchers asked people to list the names of people they had discussed important matters with over the past six months. About 48% of them listed one name, 18 % listed two, and about 29% listed more than two names for these close friends.

On average, one person had 2.03 close friends. And just over 4% of them didn’t list any names.

1According to the study, how many close friends do most of us have?

    A.25. B.2. C.3.

2The underlined word “unexpected” probably means “________” in the passage.

    A.有趣 B.令人兴奋 C.意外

3About Facebook friends, which of the following is TRUE?

A.The Facebook user never meet some Facebook friends in real life.

B.The average user usually has 310 friends.

C.Facebook friends are all old and close friends.

4The passage shows the result of the survey by ________.

    A.giving advice B.telling stories C.listing numbers

5What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Many people are worrying about their circle of friends.

B.Researchers find many people have only two close friends.

C.Young people make as many friends as possible on the Internet.

  • 22、   The quick action of Nick helped five people escape a fire on Hope Road. Nick said he usually left his house about 5:30 a.m. to do morning exercises, but that day he decided to stay at home to get his daughter ready for school. As he looked at his neighbor’s house, he realized that it was on fire. “I saw smoke and flames and ran over and started beating on the side of the house, shouting, ‘Your house is on fire! Your house is on fire!’” Nick remembered it was at about 9 a.m. that the firefighters put out the fire.

Beverly Penny and her husband, Clark, along with their younger daughters, were sleeping in the living room next to the kitchen when they heard Nick beating on the walls. She opened the bedroom door and black smoke came in. She managed to get her kids out. Her dog tried to hide under the bed, but Penny caught it by the leg and threw it out of the door. However, chickens in one of the rooms weren’t so lucky.

Firefighters got the call at about 7:05 a.m. “When we arrived with our fire trucks, there were heavy flames outside on the house.” Jerry said. He called Nick a hero, saying that without his quick responses, the result could have been much worse. “The firefighters were fast,” Nick said, “They arrived here within about three minutes.”

“They did a great job and I can’t thank them enough.” Penny said, then looked at what remained in the house and shook her head as tears rolled down in her eyes. “Everything I have is gone. Luckily nobody was hurt in the fire.” She said the fire could have been caused by an electrical problem. “We’ve been having problems with mice, so that we could have had something to do with it.” she added.

1What do you know about Nick?

A.He left house at 5:30 am that day. B.He has a son who goes to school.

C.He lives next to Beverly Penny. D.He had a day off on Thursday.

    A.At about 5:30 am. B.At about 7 am.

5According to Penny, which of the following might be criticized(批评) for the fire?

    A.Her dog. B.Her husband. C.Her chickens. D.Some mice.

  • 23、Tuesday, Jan. 6, 9:50 p. m.

We were sitting in our warm living room. The TV was on, and everything was peaceful. Suddenly the light went on and off for a few times and then went out completely. Then the rain started, and everything went black. We found the flashlight and some candles and went to bed.

    Wednesday, Jan. 7, 7:30 a. m.

My first thought after waking up was that it was pretty cold in my bedroom. Clearly, the power(电力供应) didn’t come back. After I looked out of the window, I felt even sadder: it was still raining heavily. The room was becoming colder and colder.

    Friday, Jan. 9, 6:00 p. m.

Still no power. Even though we lit(点燃) a few candles, it was difficult to do anything in their weak light. I was sitting near several candles, but I had trouble reading.

    Saturday, Jan. 10, 1:00 p. m.
