六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It was a nice winter day. After dinner, Ms. Lee checked(查看) her e-mails as usual. One e-mail caught her eye. It was from Mary, a girl who sat at the back of the classroom. She answered questions a lot in class.

    Ms. Lee,

I love you and your classes. They are always interesting and full of surprises. Wish you a good holiday! Well, Steve, Ella and I want to improve our English during the holidays. We’ve no idea what to do. Any good advice?

    Mary

Stopping here, Ms. Lee began to think carefully. “Steve spends lots of time remembering words, but always forgets most of them quickly! Ella didn’t do well in the final exam. She has to go over her lessons a lot. Mary will go to a writing competition. She needs to read more and improve her writing in a short time.”

Just then, her phone rang. It was a message from her best friend, an English teacher in another middle school. Her friend suggested a trip to Hong Kong. Ms. Lee told her she was available, but she didn’t feel like going because she still had no idea how to help her students. Her friend laughed and soon sent her a picture with a QR code (二维码) in it. “It’s all you want,” her friend said. • 22、At the age of 16, Julia left school and worked at a restaurant. For many years, she was only interested in making money. Then one day she had a serious car accident which changed her life. "I had a terrible car accident in August 1996. It took me 10 months to recover (康复) from the accident. During that time, I realized I wanted to find a more meaningful reason for being here in this world," said Julia.

As soon as she recovered, Julia gave up working at the restaurant and traveled to California. One day she found a big company wanted to cut down part of a forest. In the forest there were lots of redwood trees. One of the trees was more than 1 ,000 years old.

Then Julia learned a group called Our Earth was trying to save the redwood forest from the company. They decided to find someone to live in a redwood tree and hoped this would stop the company from cutting the trees down. Julia volunteered.

Julia lived in the tree for over two years without ever going down. It was cold and wet in a redwood tree. There were even very serious winter storms while Julia was in the tree.

Finally the company decided to protect the trees Julia lived in. They agreed never to cut down the big redwood tree or the trees around it. When Julia put her feet on the earth, she began to cry. But she continued to do other things to protect the environment.

    根据短文内容,判断正(T)误(F)。

5Julia understood there were more meaningful things to do from her experiences.

  • 24、My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around our neighbourhood. Two dog walkers passed by and one of them said, “Never seen that dog around here before.”

We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the hill. We bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar. There was a phone number on it, but no one answered.

The dog was really thin. It didn’t have many teeth left.

Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with me. Julie got home and back again when I was only half way there. So, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend ate its food.

Finally we got it home. We gave it a blanket, more food and wondered what to do next.

After trying for many times, we got a reply from the number. A lady came. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. It was very old and should probably be put to sleep, but the lady just couldn’t bring herself to do it. So, Tara was safely returned home.

Here is the truth of the story:

In fact, Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I still didn’t find it possible. I was going to turn and go when an old, weak dog walked between us and collapsed. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.

We did help it. And here am I writing the story in my own home. In the song “Love Is Not a Fight”, Warren Barfield talks about marriage. He sings, “And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door.”

Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.

【1】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The two dog walkers didn’t like the dog.

B.The old black dog was sick and weak and couldn’t walk.

C.After finding the dog, the writer phoned its owners.

D.Most of the dog’s teeth had been pulled out by someone.

【2】We can learn from Paragraph 4 that ________.

A.Julie bought some food for the dog

B.the writer had his own pet dog

C.the dog didn’t go with the writer

D.the dog didn’t eat any of the food.

【3】After they got the dog home, the couple ________.

    A.decided to raise the dog

B.took good care of the dog

C.found out that its owner was a lady

D.found it hard to get to sleep

【4】The underlined part “our problem” in the passage refers to the fact that ________.

A.The writer didn’t want to take Julie’s advice

B.Julie disagreed with the writer’s travel on business

C.an old and worn out dog appeared in front of them

D.the couple had some trouble with their marriage

【5】What happened at the end of the story?

A.The writer had decided not to leave his family.

B.The dog stayed with the couple from then on.

    C.The writer sang a song.

D.Angels came to the writer’s home.

七、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、Just how well do you read? You may find this question difficult to answer. If a friend asks how tall you are, you may hand him a r【1】 and tell him to measure you. But you can’t measure your reading ability with a ruler.

Here is one way to j【2】 your reading ability. Take from your desk the book you are using this year — the textbooks needed for English, math and science. Read a few paragraphs from each textbook. Then ask y【3】 these questions. Do I read these books easily? Is it difficult for me to get the information from these books? Am I struggling (挣扎) through each book — looking at each word again and again, but still not able to understand w【4】 the words mean? Most people like you need to make their reading b【5】. The fifth grade pupil knows that the textbooks for the sixth grade will be more difficult than those he is using now. The middle school student knows that he must prepare to read books written for high school boys and girls.

The high school student knows that he must prepare to read c【6】 texts. And so it goes. Most people say, “I want to help myself.”

There is always one good rule that you should follow. You should keep your mind on all you are doing. A car may run through a stop light because the c【7】 driver is thinking of something other than his driving. The same is true with reading. If you think of nothing else while you are reading, you will become a better reader.
