21、 “Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy- they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.” - Jeff Bezos.
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife Mackenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Mackenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he persuaded me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I believed I would always be haunted(萦绕) by a decision to not try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.

23、Morning, everyone. This is BBC Six Minutes English. Today we are going to talk about tips for travelling in England. If you want your trip to be a pleasant one, please keep these rules in your mind.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you are not allowed to buy alcohol(酒精) in this country if you are less than 18 years old. Your friends can’t buy it for you either.
Secondly, it is about the noise. Enjoy yourselves as much as you can, but please don’t make too much or too loud noise, especially at night. Too much or loud noise will make the people around you feel uncomfortable.
The third one is about crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use zebra crossings and do not move until the traffic light is green.
My next point is about littering. It is against the law to drop litter carelessly in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.
Finally, it comes to smoking. It is also against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 18 years of age.
That is the end of today’s programme. Now, are there any questions? If you want to know more about our programme, please contact us at 2066781578.

24、Every time we get on a plane, we’re asked to either turn off our phones or change them to the flight mode—it’s for “safety reasons”.
But according to The Conversation website, having to turn our phones off on a plane is “a service issue, not a safety one”.
When we speak on our phones in the air, they can cause interference to the aircraft’s radios. Pilots can hear this interference in their headphones. “It’s the same noise you’ll be familiar with, if you put your mobile too close to a speaker,” the Mirror noted. “This sound does not affect safety, but is annoying for sure.” Though speaking on a phone during a flight isn’t dangerous, it isn’t still a good idea.
When we make or receive a call on the ground, we connect (连接) to a cell tower that deals with all calls within an 80-kilometer radius (范围). As we move from place to place we are “handed on” to different cell towers.
As US scientist Sven Bilen explains, there shouldn’t be too many “handoffs (信号转移)”; people shouldn’t travel faster than cars and phone users should be close to the ground.
However, during the flight, telephone calls cannot meet any of the conditions above. And even worse, our cellphones would stop working.
But now things are beginning to change. If we still can’t speak during a flight, we can use other phone functions (功能). For example, Airbus A330 of Emirates Airline has in-flight WiFi to make passengers send and receive short messages in the air. In the future, as Bilen points out, it may be possible for air travelers to make and receive calls freely.
