22、 Thinking about my time in France, I noticed quite a few differences between the French and the English.
The first example is about the French language. In French, there are two ways to say ‘you’: ‘tu’ is the informal (不正规的) form, while ‘vous’ is the formal form. When I learnt French, I was taught to call everyone ‘vous’ unless ( 除 非 ) they were my family or a friend. So I was surprised that everyone in France used the informal ‘tu’ all the time. School children used ‘tu’ with their teachers as well as the head teacher. Even strangers I met in the street would call me ‘tu’, and sometimes ‘tu’ was written on street signs. But I continued to use ‘vous’ because I didn’t want people to think I was being impolite. To be honest, I’m thankful that in English we don’t have to worry about these things!
As you might know, school children in the UK traditionally wear school uniforms but in France pupils do not wear uniforms. It was a culture shock for me to see children wearing Spiderman T-shirts and baggy blue jeans while in the classroom. The final difference was the relaxed attitude at school. Teachers were never in a hurry, and the children and teachers were given long rests and much time to eat their lunch. While in the UK, school day might seem highly pressured (有压力的).
The UK and France are only separated by a small channel of the sea, but there are many differences between the two cultures! Anyway, I cannot deny (否认) what a great chance it was to live and work in another country.
【1】Which of the following is NOT a culture shock to the writer?
A. It takes French students much time to eat lunch.
B. French students use ‘tu’ with their head teacher.
C. Students in France wear different clothes at school.
D. Teachers and students in the UK seem highly pressured.
【2】What might the writer say to his friends when he goes back to the UK?
A. It’s very fantastic to stay in France. B. People in France are more polite than us.
C. The French culture is just the same as ours. D. It’s more difficult to learn French in France.
【3】What is the best title of the passage?
A. Life in France B. Troubles in France
C. Cultural Differences D. Different Languages
23、What is soil? It is the skin of the Earth. It supports all forms of our life. Nearly all our food comes from the soil. Some of us eat meat, some eat vegetables, but most animals live on plants. If there are no plants, we will have no vegetables, no animals and no meat.
Plants grow in soil with a dark colour. The dark soil is humus (腐殖土壤). Dead leaves, dead plants and animals’ waste make it, but it takes a long time. When the humus has been made, plants can grow well in it.
All soil needs food. Animals’ waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crops should not be grown in the same place every year. A change of crops and the use of a good fertilizer will keep the land in good condition.
When the soil is dry, the wind blows it away. Sometimes heavy rain carries the humus down to a river. People should grow more and more trees and grass to stop wind from carrying the humus away. It takes hundreds of years to make humus, so we must save every bit of it. Without soil, how can we live?

24、Morning, everyone. This is BBC Six Minutes English. Today we are going to talk about tips for travelling in England. If you want your trip to be a pleasant one, please keep these rules in your mind.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you are not allowed to buy alcohol(酒精) in this country if you are less than 18 years old. Your friends can’t buy it for you either.
Secondly, it is about the noise. Enjoy yourselves as much as you can, but please don’t make too much or too loud noise, especially at night. Too much or loud noise will make the people around you feel uncomfortable.
The third one is about crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use zebra crossings and do not move until the traffic light is green.
My next point is about littering. It is against the law to drop litter carelessly in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.
Finally, it comes to smoking. It is also against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 18 years of age.
