21、News of an air crash in the north of England has just been received. The plane, which was on a charter (包机) flight from London to Carlisle, was carrying a party of businessmen on their way to a trade fair. It seems likely that the plane ran into a heavy fog as it neared Carlisle and had to circle for twenty minutes. Everything seemed to be going well. The pilot was in constant radio communication with Grand Control, when the engines suddenly went wrong and all contact was lost. The plane crashed on the site of the Roman camp at Hadrian’s Hill, a place well known to archaeologists (考古学家) and tourists.
So far few details have been reported, but it is feared that at least twenty people lost their lives, among them the pilot, who was killed at once. The local ambulance and firemen were on the scene within minutes of the crash, but additional help had to be rushed from other areas.
Mr. Lesilie? Collins told our reporter, “We passengers noticed the engines were making a funny noise. Of course we couldn’t see anything because of the fog, but the pilot said there was nothing to worry about. The next thing we knew, the engines went dead. 22、 All big cities are quite similar. Living in a modern Asian city is not very different from living in an American city. But it is different from living on farms however.
In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each family lives on its own fields and often can't see any neighbor. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning. American farmers stay on their land all the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on horses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas there are some small schools serving a few families and the children walk to school.
Of course, life keeps changing for everyone including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios and TV sets. And of course, there are modern machines for faming now. All these have greatly changed farmers’ life.
Before, farming in America was often a lonely way of living for a long time. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new ways, and thought of their own ideas instead of following old ways.

23、Who is the oldest man in the world? Where is the world’s highest waterfall? To find the answers, you can check the Guinness World Records book.
The idea of the book came from a British man named Sir Hugh Beaver. He and his friends once argued about which European game bird was the fastest. They failed to find the answer in any book. Later, the twins Norris and Ross McWhirter were invited to write a book of facts and figures. Neither of them knew that the book would become an all-time bestseller.
Since it was first published in 1955, more than 100 million copies of the book have been sold in almost 40 languages, and a new edition(版本) comes out every year.
Many people have tried to get into the book. There are 50,000 applications(申请) from 174 countries every year, according to the Guinness organization.
Anyone who thinks he or she has a very special skill or talent can apply for a Guinness record. After that, Guinness judges will evaluate(评估) your application. After many rounds of research and verification(查证), they will finally send you an official Guinness World Records certificate(证书)!

24、I felt very sad because I was not able to get the ticket to the film Hero last Friday. I learned from the newspaper that tickets could be bought at the cinema box office in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 a. m. and 4:00 p. m. Since I work from 9:00 a. m. to 5:30 p. m. , the only time I could go to the cinema is during my 45 minutes’ lunchtime. It is a pity that the cinema is on the other side of the town and the bus service between my company and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes.
Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come round the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip, so I had to go back. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the cinema in twenty minutes. But when I got there, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man said he had been waiting in line for over an hour. I found I would not have enough time to wait in line. I caught the next bus and went back across the town.
By Friday I understood my only hope was to make the trip by car. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to see the film. The trip by car only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I reached the cinema, I was delighted to see that nobody was waiting in line. But I quickly found out that it was because they had already sold out all the tickets.
