21、 When I was about 12, I had an enemy (敌人), a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings (缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you are really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark (标记) the points that are true. Pay no attention (注意力) to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I found that about half the things were true. Some of them couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could-and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to a very clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty (职责). Don’t close your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice returns to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

23、Considered as one of the English language’s most talented poets, John Keats wrote poems that focused on imagination, human nature, and life. Although Keats didn't receive much education on literature, his own studies and interests brought him much success. Also, his own life situation made a great difference to his poems.
Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middleclass family, the young John didn't attend a private school, but went to a public one. His mother was not well educated. His teachers and his family’s friends considered him as a common boy who preferred playing and fighting much more to minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother's because of tuberculosis(肺结核), he began seeing life differently. He wanted to keep away from the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.
At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying medical treatment so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary dream had taken too much of his life, especially with his love for the poems of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, named O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written another full poem, but was sharply criticized (批评) by a magazine. However, it didn’t stop his dream of poems.
John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story includes a farmer who falls in love with the moon and leads him to a trip of one boy's hope to deal with the limitations (限制) of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more storybased and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry because of his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” connected to his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would like to mix all that he learned together. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and finally take his life in 1821.

24、These days, more and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year” between their graduation(毕业)from high school and their university(大学)studies. This means that they take a year off, to do something else, before they start their studies.
For most students, spending time in foreign countries is the favourite activity-and Australia is the favourite place to go.
Many parents, teachers and business people agree that travelling can teach important values(价值). Just like the 20-year-old young man William said, “During the gap year, I learnt to solve different problems all by myself and began to realize the importance of getting along with people of different cultures.”
There are many companies around the world that welcome these students on their projects-helping people in poorer countries, or even in your home country. Although(尽管)you don’t get paid for your work, this kind of work can teach important skills-decision making and finding ways to problems, for example-that will help a student in a job one day.
Finally, the knowledge and experience you get will one day be very useful in an area you hope to study or work in.
If several university graduates(毕业生)are making applications for the same job, gap year work experience allows you to say, “I’ve already had some experience of this kind of work.” And that can help you get the job!
