If you ever go to the US and eat at a restaurant, there’s a very important difference you should know about. US people have a custom to give money to waiters and waitresses as a tip for their work.
But why is this? Shouldn’t waiters get paid enough by their bosses? Well, many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage (最低工资) and work for tips to make up for that. According to the American travel website TripAdvisor, some states pay their servers (服务员) only $2.13 (about 14 yuan) per hour.
While no one makes you tip, if you are at a sit-down restaurant, it is usually expected that you tip your waiter 15 to 20 percent of what your bill is.
It’s not just for waiters either. Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips. But it is much more expected to tip waiters.
The US hasn’t always had this tipping culture. In fact, people were mostly against it until the Prohibition Era (禁酒令时代) in the 1920s. The government said no one could sell alcohol (酒). Then, restaurants had trouble making enough money. So they started to ask people to tip their waiters.
This tipping culture has lasted through the years, but most people don’t like it. Some think restaurant bosses use it as an excuse to not pay their workers well. There isn’t much action being taken to make a change yet. So for now, be sure to tip your waiter when in the US.

25、 It was not long ago that I first learned how important having a passion(激情) is to life.
That day I went with my mum to drive my sister to the library. I was bored. Then, as my mum stopped at a red light, someone on the side of the road caught my attention. It was a man dressed in rags(破旧衣服).He was homeless. That didn't interest me, for I had seen many like him before.
But in some way he was different. This man was not sitting down with a sad expression. He had a radio in his hand and was dancing happily to the music. The radio seemed to be the most precious thing he had.
“Mum, why does that man have a radio even though he's homeless?” I asked.
“He bought it,” she answered. I was still confused.
“But if he's homeless, why doesn't he use the money to buy food or clothes? He wasted it on something he doesn't need.”
“Well, Sarah, sometimes food and clothes aren't the most important things. We need happiness, too.”
That man must care enough about music, so he bought a radio instead of food or clothes. I soon realized that happiness is the key to life. Without it, there's nothing to expect. A passion gives a person the feeling of happiness they need to keep going.
Since then I've never spent a day without thinking of what's truly important. A home, a meal, clothes—these things are not the only things that make up our lives. What's often forgotten is that we all need a joy, a light in a dark day. We all need a passion.

26、A Discussion
Host: Hello! I’m Gavin from All Talk 970 FM. Welcome to our program. Today our topic is part-time jobs. Are they good for school children or not?
Headmaster: Certainly not. Children have got two full-time jobs already: growing-up and going to school. Part-time jobs make them so tired that they fall asleep in classes.
Mrs. Black: I agree. I know school hours are short, and there’s a lot of homework to do, too. Children need enough sleep.
Mr. Black: Young children perhaps, except some boys, stay at school until they’re eighteen or nineteen. A part-time job can’t harm them. In fact , it’s good for them. They can earn pocket-money by themselves. And they can see something of the world outside school.
Businessman: You’re quite right. Boys learn a lot from a part-time job. And we shouldn’t forget that some families need the extra money. If the students don’t take part-time jobs, they can’t stay at school.

27、“Without music, life would be a mistake,” famous German philosopher(哲学家)Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算).
For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus(关注)on subjects that are tested more often.
However, learning music is useful in many ways.
When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck did well in playing the piano.

B. Playing the piano needs people to use fingers to make sounds.
C. Decoding music notes is needed while we are playing music.
D. Different abilities are needed to work together while we are playing music.
【4】How many scientists who are good at playing music are mentioned in this passage?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
【5】What’s the writer’s opinion according to this passage?
A. Music is as simple as it looks. B. Music classes should be cut in some schools.
C. Music is a big part of our lives. D. Music isn’t a very important life skill for us.
