Animals are unlike people. They can't speak. They are not able to express themselves even if they feel pain and sadness. 【1】  Now ,we can learn from Sophie Smith and be animals' true friends— a volunteer working for animals.

On Feb. 3, 2014, a girl from Massachusetts, the US, said that circuses(马戏团)should no more use hooks(钩子)or chains on elephants. And the government should do something

2 They can’t walk freely. And chains bring them great pain. Some people even use hooks when they train elephants. The hooks are sharp and bring elephants much more pain. Circus actors even push a hook into an elephant's body to move it along during a show. “After some time, the elephant's skin breaks down. It feels the pain, but it can’t say anything. It can' t say no to those cruel people." Sophie told local newspaper Marblehead Reporter. She also said that it would be bad for children.

3   Back in 2011, as a sixth-grader, she searched for different animal protection groups online and helped them.

So when she spoke in front of 70 people at the state house, Sophie was not afraid. She was full of courage.

“Elephants aren’t treated with kindness.  4  I speak for them with my voice, and my love." she said.

    A. Since they cannot talk, I speak for them.

    B. They just need people’s help.

    C. Some elephants are kept in chains.

    D. Sophie’s love toward animals started a long time ago.

  • 25、   Wang Qi, 14:

I love taking online courses. They give me a lot more choices and freedom. We can choose to learn whatever we want. Also, online classes enable us to study whenever and wherever we want, which is very convenient.

    Wu Jun, 13:

I don’t think taking online classes is a good way to study. There are many temptations ( 诱惑) on the Internet. Maybe students will play computer games while taking lessons. Or even they will contact with classmates through QQ or Wechat. Students can be distracted from their courses easily. The whole learning process is not as organized as it is in the classroom.

Online classrooms are beneficial. We might feel more focused on learning when we are alone in front of a computer with no one to distract us. In addition, taking courses online also means we can have more time to use a computer, which is a good way to practice our computer skills.

    Li Chunjie, 14:

I think the idea of taking online courses is crazy. It can increase our exposure (接触) to computers and the radiation (辐射) from them could do harm to the human body, especially our eyes. Also, sitting in front of a computer for a long time without exercising can be harmful to our health.

  • 26、The Silk Road is a historically important international trade route between China and the Mediterranean(地中海).  It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been a bridge between East and West for over 2 000 years.

The ancient road started from Chang'an (now Xi'an) and ended in Eastern Europe, near today's Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. It was about 6 500 kilometers long and went across one-fourth of the planet.

The Silk Road got its name in the 19th century because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Silk, jade(玉石), ceramics(陶器) and iron went west to Rome. And from the west came glass, gems(宝石) and food like carrots.

The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. It was more than an ancient international trade route.  Besides trade, knowledge about arts, science and literature, as well crafts and technologies was shared across the Silk Road.  In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.

Today, China is trying to build the "21st Century Marine(海洋的) Silk Road". With the help of APEC held in Beijing in November 2014, the dream of One Belt One Road (the "Silk Road Economic(经济的) Belt" and "gist Century Marine Silk Road")("一带一路") is coming true.

    D. It went across one fourth of the earth.

4Why was it named the Silk Road?

    C. Because things were traded from market to market along this road.

    D. Because the ancient traders bought and sold things along this road.

  • 27、   "Where’s Daddy going with the axe(斧头)?"said Joan to her mother.

"Out to the hoghouse(猪圈)," replied Mrs. Arable. "Some pigs were born last night."

"I don’t know why he needs an axe," continued Joan. She was only eight.

"Well," said her mother, "one of the pigs is very small, thin and weak, and it will never grow up. So your father has to do away with it."

"Do away with it?" cried Joan. "Just because it’s smaller than the others?"

"Don’t cry, Joan!" Mrs Arable said. "The pig would probably die anyway." Joan pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors.

"Please don’t do it!" she said with eyes full of tears(眼泪). "It’s not its mistake to be so weak." "Joan," Mr. Arable said gently, "you will have to learn to control yourself."
