四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Are you preparing a big test? If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the book. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “while we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In  this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.

Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as yoga or tai-chi, helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.

1According to the passage, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?

A.Exercise helps make our blood vessels. B.Physical exercise helps us think better. C.The brain needs special mental exercise.   D.The more exercise, the bigger brain.

2The underlined word “trace” most probably means   .

A.to find the result of something B.to seek the details of something

C.to follow the example of something D.to find the origin of something

3Why is yoga suggested for seniors?

A.It does good to the bones of old people. B.It does not increase the heart rate. C.It includes learning new actions.   D.It can be done in groups.

4What is main idea of this passage?

A.How exercise makes people strong. B.How to get good scores on a test. C.How exercise helps the brain.   D.How the brain can change.

  • 25、   Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, about 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. Now, scientists have some interesting ideas about why people are shy. Scientists say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful (警惕的) than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists believe some shyness is genetic (遗传的).

Family size may be another factor. Scientists at Harvard University found 66 percent of shy children had older brothers and sisters. These children were often bullied (欺侮) by their brothers and sisters. Therefore, they became shy. However, children with no brothers or sisters can be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. It’s hard for them to develop social skills as children from big families.

You may also be shy because of your birthplace. In Japan, most people are shy. But in Israel (以色列), only one third of people are. Why? One scientist says they treat failure differently. In Japan, when people fail, they blame (责备) themselves. In Israel, people often blame other things, such as family, friends, or bad luck.

For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can overcome your shyness. They suggest trying new things and talking with others more.

1What is the story mainly about?

    A.Happiness. B.Shyness. C.Loneliness. D.Kindness.

2How many people feel shy at some point in their lives?

A.80 percent of people. B.50 percent of people.

C.15 to 20 percent pf people. D.6 percent of people.

3According to the story, what factors may result in shyness?

A.Genes, friends and birthplace. B.Genes, family size and birthplace.

C.Family size, friends and failure. D.Family size, birthplace and education.

4What suggestion do scientists give to shy people?

A.Blame their failure on others. B.Try to find out why they are shy.

C.Stay away from other shy people. D.Try new things and talk more.

5What can we infer from the story?

A.Most babies are born shy. B.If you are shy now, you will be shy forever.

C.Many shy children have older brothers and sisters. D.Shyness doesn’t influence people’s lives.

  • 26、In some science fiction movies, evil robots refuse to die, no matter how hard people fight back.

Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating (挨打) and keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider with four legs.

Until now, even the most advanced (先进的) robot was almost certain to break down when it was damaged. That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.

To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then figure out the machine’s shape at any moment.

The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better artificial (假的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who losethem. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.

“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”

1Why do robots easily break down when they are damaged?

    A. They cannot repair themselves.

    B. The computer has changed a lot.

    C. They have no computers inside.

    D. The computer cannot work if the robot changes.

2The new technology allows the robot to _________.

    A. do house work for humans

    B. keep working after being damaged

    C. remember a lot of information

    D. tell people where it is

3The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.

    A. sensors   B. robots

    C. arms and legs   D. scientists

4How do the sensors in the robot work?

    A. They can replace the computer when it’s broken.

    B. They can find out where the damage comes from.

    C. They help the computer learn the robot’s condition.

    D. They can send signals to the person who uses the robot.

    5The passage is probably from_____________.
