  • 24、   I grew up in a very poor common family. My father used some unusual ways to teach me. The following is the one I value most.

On the first day of 2nd grade, my father asked me if I could read well. “Yes, I can,” I said. So he gave me a map with street names and directions on how to walk to school. My school is 3 miles away, and I had never been off my home street by myself, ever.

My father said, “Lily, everything you need to know is written on the map, read the map and follow the directions.” My father kissed me goodbye and sent me out the door. I was afraid. How could I walk to school alone? On my way to school, I cried as I walked.

I don’t know how long it took me to get to school, but I do remember how I felt when I came around the last street corner, and saw my school. I jumped up and down. I wished I could tell my father that I made it.

My father wasn’t there when I got home and I was asleep when he got home. The next day I waited for him to ask what had happened. He never did. Years later, I asked him why he did that and why he didn’t care what had happened. He just looked at me for a while and then said, “I didn’t have to ask you, because I knew. Fire accidents often happen in our daily life. So, as middle school students, it is very important for us to learn what to do when a fire breaks out. Here are some tips, and please keep in mind.

Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells us to leave the house at once.

Make escape plans. We should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.

Prepare fire extinguishers (灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them. Practice for a fire. We should do fire practice because they teach us about fire safety. Everyone should know the following fire rules:

Don't open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.

Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire.

The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.

What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don't run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.

There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don't forget to call 119 for help.

  • 27、One day in 1903 French scientist Edouard Benedictus climbed high to get something on a high shelf in his laboratory. He carelessly hit an empty glass flask(烧瓶)and it fell to the stone floor.

Benedictus climbed down, expecting a mess, but he found a surprise. The glass hadn’t broken into a million pieces! It had cracked(破裂), but it had held together. Benedictus wondered why.

His helper explained he had used the flask to hold liquid plastic(液态塑料). Then he had put the flask aside and forgotten to wash it. The liquid plastic dried, so the flask looked empty. Benedictus found that the dried plastic had kept the cracked glass from falling apart.

The same week, Benedictus read a report about a car accident in the newspaper. The car was a new and exciting invention, and many people were driving fast on the roads. When accidents happened, people were often hurt by flying broken glass. Suddenly Benedictus thought of the broken flask. Could his accident be something useful?

Benedictus spent a lot of time in the lab, trying to find out the best way to make safety glass for cars. Finally, Benedictus put some liquid plastic between two pieces of glass and pressed(压)them together. When he hit it, the “glass-and-plastic sandwich” cracked, but it didn’t break into small pieces.

Benedictus succeeded. He wrote in his diary, “I produced my first piece of Triplex(the name for his invention)-full of promise(充满希望)for the future.”
