四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Some days, don’t you think, “Wouldn’t it be nice if the laundry would just do itself?” Self-cleaning clothes may sound crazy. But Australian researchers have found a way to make something like this possible!

A team at RMIT University, found a way to put special nanostructures(纳米结构) into clothing, which can then clean the clothes. When sunlight hits the nanostructures, they break down the dirt and stains(污渍). The nanostructures don’t break down the actual clothing because cotton and the other clothing materials are too strong to be broken down. According to the report, the researchers covered the clothing in a solution made of silver and copper(铜) nanostructures. All it takes is 40 minutes of sunlight and your clothes will look as well as new. So if you spill on yourself during lunch, you can step outside for a walk, and it will be clean by the time you go inside.

It not only makes your life easier, but can also be good for the environment. According to the US Department of Energy, the average load of laundry uses about 25 gallons(about 94 liters) of water. Water is a very important resource, so using less of it to wash clothes is better for the environment.

So one of the scientists at RMIT University knows more needs to be done. “There’s more work to do before we can start throwing away our washing machines,” said the professor. “But this is a strong foundation(基础).” So what’s the next step? Professors want to either start selling the solution by itself or convincing clothing makers to treat their clothing with the solution.

【1】Why does self-cleaning clothes sound crazy?

A.Because it’s impossible to achieve it.

B.Because a special machine is created.

C.Because the clothes don’t need washing.

D.Because the clothes can be washed by themselves.

【2】What will NOT help self-cleaning clothes come true?

    A.A walk.

    B.Solution.

    C.Sunlight.

    D.Nanostructures.

【3】We can infer the underlined word “solution” probably means ________ here.

    A.谜底

    B.溶解过程

    C.溶液

A.Self-cleaning clothes needs a kind of solution.

B.Self-cleaning clothes can make your life easier.

C.Self-cleaning clothes can wash clothes without water.

D.There is more work to do before self-cleaning clothes is achieved.

【5】The writer thinks self-cleaning clothes is meaningful to the environment because ________.

    A.it can save water

    B.it can reduce pollution

    C.washing machines can be thrown

D.clothing materials can’t be broken down

  • 25、   In South Korea, many schools hire English teachers from abroad, but as you know, there are not so many English native teachers in South Korea. A team of engineers has created a robot that they hope will take the place of foreign teachers.

But Engkey’s voice is not her own. It is controlled by English teachers. With the help of the camera, English teachers in the Philippines can see and hear the students.

  • 26、   “Keep calm and carry on” — You can see this message written on many T-shirts and other tourist souvenirs (纪念品) in London and the UK. It has become so famous that there are many versions (版本) of it: “keep calm and drink tea”; “keep calm and love dogs”; “keep calm and learn English”. As you can see, you can substitute (替换) the “carry on” part for anything you want, really!

But where does the original phrase come from? Well, it comes from World War . It was a message to calm people down and encourage them during the war when London was being attacked. The idea was to carry on with life as normal, as if there was no war.

Staying calm when you’re in trouble is known as a very British thing to do. British people are famous for keeping a “stiff upper lip”. This means your lips (嘴唇) don’t shake when you are excited or frightened: you stay calm and don’t show people how you are really feeling.

Are British people still like this today? Do they still keep a “stiff upper lip”? Modern Britain is very different from how it was 60 years ago and British people probably show their feelings more than they used to. But if “keep calm and carry on” is still so famous today, then it must be something that British people still think and care about, and something they are still famous for. So next time you are frightened or in danger, just keep calm and carry on!

1Where is the original phrase “Keep calm and carry on” from?
