During the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), there was a government official named Yang Zhen.
One day, Yang ran into his old coworker Wang Mi during a trip.
In the past, Yang noticed Wang’s talent and promoted (提拔) him.
Wang never forgot Yang’s help and invited Yang to stay over for the night.
It was near midnight when Wang knocked on the door of Yang’s bedroom. He handed Yang a bag and said, “This is to thank you for teaching me and helping me become who I am today.” Yang looked in the bag. It was full of gold ingots (金锭).
“Do I look like a person who accepts bribes (贿赂)? I thought you knew me well!” Yang said angrily.
“It’s late at night. No one will know if we keep it a secret.” said Wang.
“What do you mean no one would know? Heaven knows, Earth knows, you know and I know.” Yang said.
Wang left the room in shame.
What do we learn from it?
Yang Zhen was an honest and just person both in front of others and when he was alone. His virtue (美德) of shendu(慎独), or self-restraint, made him a great government official.
The idea of self-restraint was important in ancient China. For example, the book Dizigui teaches children to “enter an empty house as if it was occupied (入虚室, 如有人) ”. This means that even when nobody is watching, you should behave as if there are others nearby. If you can’t keep your rules and do bad things in secret, it may lead you down a troubled path.
This story is 2,000 years old. But the lesson is still important today. In 2017, President Xi Jinping told this story at an important meeting. He asked government officials to be free from corruption (腐败). But as students, you should also keep this lesson in mind. Will you save food when no one is watching? Will you be careful with the language you use on social media? We should often ask: am I still a moral (道德的) person when I’m alone?
【1】Yang Zhen promoted Wang Mi because ________ .
A.he knew Wang was talented
B.he wanted to thank Wang for his help
C.Wang was his old coworker
D.Wang lived a poor life
【2】We might describe Yang as being ________ .
A.two-faced
B.shameless
C.silly
D.just
【3】Why was Yang angry with Wang?
A.Because Wang gave his secrets away.
B.Because he found Wang wasn’t talented.
C.Because he found Wang accepted bribes.
D.Because Wang tried to bribe him.

What should a kid that does karate (空手道) do over the summer? Braden chose to teach karate to people who might never have a chance to learn it. He created a class for disabled adults at a center that offers job training for them. The class was very popular.

Florida teen band The Garbage-Men is performing on the stage. The band has five members. They are Jack Berry, Ollie Gray, Harrison Paparatto, Austin Siegel and Evan Tucker. The five teens are making music from waste. The Garbage-Men band’s instruments are made from recycled things. The guitars are boxes. A horn(号) is made from pipes. The keyboard is formed from old bottles.
The band started about two years ago. Jack Berry who was in eighth grade at the time decided to make a playable, home-made guitar, after some trial-and-error(反复试验), he ended up building it from a cereal box, a yardstick and toothpicks. After Jack showed his creation to his friend Ollie Gray, Ollie had the idea to form a band using other home-made instruments as a way to improve recycling. “We want to show people there is more to recycling than throwing things away in the bin.” Jack, 16, told TFK. “You can actually reuse materials.”
Last year, the Garbage-Men played at local events, including festivals, farmer’s markets. Typically, the teens set up on the street and performed popular songs from the 1960s, including classic Beatles and crowd favorite “Wipe Out”. They talked about recycling and offered tips for how to improve the environment. While they were performing, Jack’s little brother Trent, 11, gave out leaflets about recycling and helped sell the band’s CDs and other musical products.
The band donated the money from sales to charity. They have raised more than $2,500 for Heifer International. The organization gives farm animals, seeds and agricultural training to people in poor countries to help end poverty and hunger. “It’s a good, sustainable-development (持续发展的)charity,” Jack says, “By donating one animal, you help the whole community.”
The band, all tenth graders, tries to play a show every week. They’ve also played on a Florida radio station. The teens hope to take their shows on the road by touring in other states. “Music is a really good way to get a good message across to people because it’s really close.” Jack says. Their instruments may be rubbish, but their message isn’t.

27、Steve Jobs, the founder and former CEO of Apple, died in 2011 at the age of 56. Jobs had been fighting cancer since 2004.
Even as a young man, Jobs was never one who followed the rules. He dropped out of college after only six months. He quit his first job to backpack around India. Jobs says that those early experiences made him creative. They opened up his mind and helped to create Apple’s “think different” spirit.
As a successful businessman, Steve’s passion and energy encouraged the world. He told us to “do what you love”. He believed “ People with passion can change the world for the better.” He made computers fun and interesting. His iPhone, iPad and iTouch are popular around the world. People say Jobs sells dreams, not products.
Jobs taught us how to face failure. He was fired by the successor he himself chose. Despite this, Jobs didn’t hide away. He picked himself up and continued to follow his passion.
Another valuable lesson he taught us was to listen to that voice in the back of your head – the voice that tells you if you’re on the right track or not. Most of us simply decide that we’re going to work in finance or become a doctor because our parents tell us this is what we should do.
