  • 22、   As I enjoyed the soft sunshine in the pool, my 8-year-old daughter swam up behind me.

    "Guess who, Mommy?" she said.

"No idea. Who is this mystery (神秘的) person?" I joked.

The pair of us talked and laughed together for the rest of the afternoon.

"Remember this," I told myself. "You are happy, right here, right now."

Fast forward a few months, and my thoughts sounded different.

"Just keep going," I would think, or, "How many sleeps until the weekend?"

I didn't like what I was likesomeone sleepwalking (梦游) through the week, running on coffee and too tired at night to do anything but watch TV. I thought the Christmas break would recognize (使再次充满活力) me, making me ready to take on another year of early starts. But I had to listen to my heart.

My patient husband and friends had listened to me going over the decision for six months, but the time for talking was over. It was time to make my choice: My daughter needed me and I needed her.

When she was really young, I loved the freedom of going to work as the sun was rising, happy that my family was still sound asleep. Then later, my daughter would set her alarm (闹钟) so she could wake up early with me to chat in the dark together.

The morning I planned to tell everyone I was quitting (放弃) my job, we sat together on the couch. I told her how nervous I was about sharing my news in a few hours' time. Stroking (抚摸) her hair, I asked my daughter what she thought about my decision. "We'll be so much happier, Mommy," she said.

Life is never simply a choice between job and family. Ask anyone, and family always comes first.

Besides, I'm not disappearing there are plenty of projects to keep me fulfilled.

    Who knows what's ahead?

Nobody knows what the future holds, but when it comes to my own, I can make sure it will be filled with long afternoons in the pool with my daughter.

1What's the writer's main propose in writing the first five paragraphs?

A.To show how lovely her daughter is.

B.To show she's happy when spending time with her daughter.

C.To explain how important her daughter is in her life.

D.To advise parents to play more with their children.

2What was the writer’s life like a few months ago?

A.Her work took up much of her energy every day.

B.She kept a balance (平衡) between family and job.

C.She enjoyed the freedom of getting up early.

D.She asked her daughter to wake up early every morning.

3Why did the writer want to quit her job?

A.She dreamed of trying something new and exciting.

B.She wanted to spend more time with her family.

C.She was treated unfairly at work.

D.Her husband and friends advised her to take a break.

4The best title of the article is__________.

    A.Daughter and I B.Family always comes first

C.Making the right choice D.The afternoon in the pool

  • 23、

    Dear Dr. Green,

My relationship with my mother is worse and worse now. It seems she’s never tired of talking. She talks here and there, day and night. More seriously, I feel like we don’t have much in common. She doesn’t always understand what I’m trying to say. What should I do?

    Yours,

    Jim

    Dear Jim,

I know how you feel. It’s not easy being your age. And it’s not easy being a mother, either.

It’s common for kids to have trouble talking with parents, and talkative mothers are not new to teenagers. But remember, she’s nagging you because she just wants what’s best for you. Talking is her way to show love and care. And she also wants to know more about you. After a day’s work, she’s tired, too. But she will never be tired of caring about you. Kids should learn to understand and care about parents.

In my opinion, it’s helpful to share school life with her. Then, you talk and she listens. Doing some housework together with her is another good way for you two to know each other better. And if possible, often tell her your feelings about the things around you. Always keep in mind: be polite and patient.

    Yours,

    Dr. Green

【1】Why does Jim write to Dr. Green?

A.Because his parents can’t understand him.

B.Because he has trouble getting on with his mother.

C.Because his mother doesn’t care about him.

D.Because he is allowed to do much housework.

【2】The underlined word “nagging” means ________in Chinese.

    A.唠叨

    B.放纵

    C.保护

    D.溺爱

【3】What advice does Dr. Green give to Jim?

    A.Argue with his mother.

B.Understand and care about his mother.

C.Take no notice of his mother and do whatever he likes.

D.Ask his mother to help with his housework.

  • 24、Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached the top of Qomolangma in 1953. It was an important event in the mountain climbing history. Also, it was a turning point in the lives of Sherpa (夏尔巴) people.

Before 1953, Sherpa people led a very simple and peaceful life. Most of them worked on farms. They had very little connection with people from other parts of the world. Now things have changed, and thanks to technology, the Sherpa world is much better connected. Tourism (旅游业) is also a main force in changing the lives of Sherpas. After 1953, especially in the 1970s, the number of tourists to Nepal (尼泊尔) increased greatly. Today, tourism is the biggest source of income (收入来源) for Sherpas. Many Sherpas now have a richer life.

Back in 1953, education and health care in Sherpa villages were poor. These days, however, there are many schools and medical clinics (医疗诊所). Changes have also come to Sherpas dinner table: they eat healthier food than they used to. They can also get food from other places. Besides, they are able to get and use quality building materials (建筑材料). The new buildings are much safer than they used to be.

There are some Sherpas, however, who like the old way of living their lives. Some older Sherpas are upset that people seem to be moving away from the traditional way of life. They believe that some Sherpas these days think too much about money. As a result, they are losing the ability to pay attention to true happiness.

【1】Now Sherpa people make money mainly by ________.

    A.serving tourists

    B.building houses

    C.doing farm work

    D.selling medicine

【2】The underlined word “quality” in Paragraph 4 means “________” in Chinese.

    A.should make more money

    B.have found true happiness

    C.are becoming less traditional

D.should pay more attention to nature

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

    A.Tourism in Nepal

    B.Changes in Sherpas’ lives

    C.Traditions of Sherpas

    D.Climbers of Qomolangma
