That night after dinner, Bobby got a flashlight and went to the barn again.
“Where are you going?” asked Bobby’s father.
“I am going to find the monster in the barn. It made a loud noise last night,” replied Bobby.
“If you are going to look for a monster, you might need some help,” said Bobby’s dad, and he walked with Bobby out to the barn. Bobby shone (把…… 照向) his flashlight into the dark barn but did not see anything.
“What did that monster sound like?” asked Bobby’s dad.
“It was loud,” said Bobby, “and it was coming from the barn.” Bobby’s dad began to laugh and he took the flashlight from Bobby. Shining the flashlight up, Bobby and his dad saw a small brown owl (猫头鹰).

22、 The children at the top of the class succeed by knowing a few basic skills that others can easily learn. According to the education experts and students themselves, here are the secrets of top students.
Study is the first thing. Once the books are open or the computer is on, phone calls are unanswered, TV shows unwatched, snacks unnoticed. Study is business; business comes before everything.
Study anywhere or everywhere. Study times are different for different children. Some work late at night when the house is quiet. Others wake early. Still others study as soon as they come home from school. However, all agree that consistency (持之以恒) is needed.
Get organized. Don’t waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. Keep everything right where one can put one’s hands on it. Even for a student who doesn’t keep his own study area organized, a bag or a drawer (抽屉) is needed to put things in to save time.
Learn how to read. The secret of good reading is to be an active (主动的) reader—one who continually asks questions that lead to a full understanding of the writer’s message.
Use your time best. Even the best students put off their work sometimes. But when that happens, they face it. “If you want to be at the top, make sure to finish the work on time.” says Christi Anderson, a top student at Lyman High School.
Take good notes and use them. Reading the text is important, but the teacher is going to test you on what he or she emphasized (强调). That’s what you find in your notes.
Another kind of important “secret” of the top students is not so secret at all. For almost all of them, their parents’ help is important.
【1】According to the third paragraph (段落), as students, we should all .

23、 People often ask me for advice about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I'll share some of my experiences. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you've started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about "How would I say them in English?" At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I'm in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It's amazing how much this helps.
For a few years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn't want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I'd try to hang out with friends who couldn't speak Chinese, so that I'd have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some advice for improvement.

24、 Do you want to know what pets do when their owners leave for work or school each day? That's the question The Secret Life of Pets tries to answer.
The cartoon movie is mainly about Max, a sweet and loyal dog. He lives inside one of the high buildings in New York. Things are going well until his loving owner, Katie, decides to bring home Duke, a careless, untidy dog from the dog pound where lost cats and dogs are kept until their owners come to take them home.
Actress Ellie Kemper plays the role of Katie. “She decides to bring home a new dog because he needs a home but she's very worried,” said Kemper.Instead of welcoming each other with open paws, the dogs can't get along well at first. When the two dogs find themselves on the mean streets of New York City, they have to team up and work together against a cute but criminal(犯罪的) rabbit named Snowball.
Kemper doesn't have any pets in real life. But she says she would like to have one if she has free time. She said, “I don't want to speak badly about cats, but I feel like you can play with dogs more.”“The story is really funny,” Kemper says. The movie also has an important message. “Animals have feelings too,” she says. “That sounds corny(老生常谈的), but we should be kind to animals.”
