How Can You Fight colds?
People usually catch a cold in the spring time and fall. It makes us question: if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can’t they find a treatment for the common cold? The answer is easy. There are hundreds of kinds of cold viruses(病毒) out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a treatment for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood(血液) rushes into your nose and brings congestion(堵塞) with it. You feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but in fact your body is “eating” the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat(高温) of your body is beating the virus. You might also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells(细胞). You may feel awful, but in fact your wonderful body is doing everything it can to beat the cold.
Different people have different ways to fight colds. In Canada and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm drinks. Other people take medicines to stop the fever, congestion and runny nose.
There is one interesting thing to note — some scientists believe that taking medicines when you have a cold is really bad for you. We know that bodies can do a great job on their own. Taking medicine can make the virus stay in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it and beat it. There is a joke on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this: It takes about 1 week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but only 7 days to get over a cold if you take medicine.

【3】The joke at the end of the passage means taking medicine ________.
A.is better than not taking it B.is really bad for your health
C.needs longer time to get well D.is the same with no medicine
23、 Barbara was driving her six-year-old son, Ben, to his piano lesson. They were late, and Barbara was beginning to think she should have called it off. Barbara, a nurse at the local hospital, was very tired at that moment. The coldest season and the terrible weather just brought them more difficulties.
"Mum!" Ben cried suddenly. "Look!" Just ahead, a car had lost control on the icy road and crashed (猛撞) into a telephone pole. Barbara stopped her car quickly and opened the door. 24、Do you want to know anything about my staying in America? Well, let me tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.
In China, I have had English classes five times a week since the fifth grade. However, I didn't know textbook English was very different from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say “I am fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say “I am good.” or “I am tired.”
One day, someone greeted me with “What's up?” It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn't know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and the US cultures. To my surprise, the US girls spend a lot of time in burning sun getting a tan(晒黑). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler(白的).
I am also surprised by how hard-working the US students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard all the time. But here, an “excellent” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music. The kids here are so talented. I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

When the bus finally came, we all hurried to get on. I got a place next to the window. A boy on a bike caught my attention(注意). He was riding beside the bus, I heard a passenger behind me shouting to the driver, but he refused to stop u【4】 we reached the next stop. Still, the boy kept 【5】 (ride). He was carrying something and 【6】 (shout). Finally, when we came to the next stop, the boy ran up to the door of the bus. I heard 【7】 exciting conversation(谈话). Then the driver stood up and asked, "Did anyone lose a bag at the last stop?" A woman on the bus shouted, "Oh, dear! It's 【8】 (I) ". She pushed her way to the driver and took the bag thankfully.
Everyone on the bus 【9】 (begin) talking about what the boy had done, and the crowd of strangers (陌生人) 【10】 (sudden) became friendly to one another.
