Bill was right. He played much better when he was having fun with Joe in the school playground than he did when he was playing for the school team in front of a large crowd.
“Maybe you just need to practise more,” Joe said.
“But I practise all the time with you! I just can’t play well when people are watching me,” Bill said.
“You play well when I’m watching.”
“That’s because I’ve known you since we were five years old. I’m just not comfortable playing when other people are around.”
Joe understood, but he also had an idea.
The next day Joe and Bill met in the school playground again to practise. After a few minutes, Joe said to his friend, “Practise without me. I’ll be back in a minute.”
Joe hurried through the school building, gathering (召集) a group of people.
When Joe explained why he needed them, everyone was happy to help. Joe told the group to stay quiet. Bill made five baskets in a row (连续) without noticing the people standing behind him.

23、A blind boy sat there with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said, “I am blind, please help.”
There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins and dropped them into the hat. He then turned the sign around and wrote something on it. He put the sign back and walked away.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and ask, “Are you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you do?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth in a different way.”
What he had written was, “Today is a beautiful day, but I can’t see it.”
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second one told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.
The first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second one told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.

Living in a foreign country can be exciting, but it’s also a difficult experience. Today I want to share my personal experience of living abroad (在国外) with you.
Living in a foreign country, I’m able to learn another language. I came to Turkey to learn art in a college two years ago. So far, I have learnt thousands of Turkish words. And knowing a second language can be very helpful (有用的) for one’s work, especially (尤其) for those who want to work in a foreign company. What’s more, living in a foreign country helps people to get to know about a different culture, which gives them a new idea about life.
However, there are also some disadvantages (缺点) of living abroad. Firstly, not knowing the spoken language of the country can be the biggest problem. And when I live in this country far away from my hometown, I miss my family and friends from time to time. We can only talk on the Internet. They also worry about me so much.
In short, living abroad alone is not as interesting as others expect. However, it can be an important experience that makes a great difference to my life.
