    Dear Kelly

Hi. We have arrived in the wet, hot city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand. All the different smells made us want to try the foods. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel where we are staying is cheap, but very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days to visit some places and then travel to Chiang Mai in the north.

    Best wishes

    Friday, March 30

    Dear Kelly

Our trip to Chiang Lai was long and boring. We visited a village in the mountains in Chiang Lai today. The people there live a very quiet life---no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say “Hello”. We can only say a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. 55 . And we will go back by air tomorrow.

After wandering around in the city for a long time, Tom finally found himself standing in front of the palace. He looked through its golden gate, hoping to take a look at a real prince. There were some guards standing at both sides of the gate. Tom, dressed badly, was moving nervously past them when he suddenly caught sight of a well-dressed boy who was followed by several servants. He was no doubt the prince!

Tom was excited. He wanted to get close to the prince and have a good look at him.

However, a guard saw him and stopped him rudely.

The young prince, whose name was Edward, was angry with the guard for his rudeness. He asked the guard to open the gate and took Tom to his room in the palace.

The two boys became good friends. They even exchanged their clothes after Tom told Edward that he had dreamt about dressing like a prince. As they stood side by side in front of a great mirror, they were surprised to find that they looked almost like twins!

The two boys were in each other's clothes when Edward suddenly noticed a bruise on Tom's hand. He soon realized that it was caused by the guard who had stopped Tom rudely. In a moment, the young prince ran out of the room. He decided to punish the guard.

  • 23、For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted to the cold dry climates of the ice age, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.

Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Nowadays, the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year; equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the U. K. each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change? If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.

On the one hand, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. On the other hand, to study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen (花粉) kept in lake mud. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments (沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and planes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rives completely unsampled. So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.

【1】Scientists have been arguing about how the Amazon might have ________ the cold dry climates of the ice age.

    A.changed in response to

    B.destroyed

    C.influenced

    D.protected

【2】Rainforests are important for ________ CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming.

    C.increasing

    D.producing

    A.the U.S.A.

    B.the U.K.

    C.England

    D.Brazil

【4】Scientists research about how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past so that they may learn in advance about how the rainforests ________.

    A.draw down CO2

    B.still protect the soil

    C.will get smaller

    D.will manage in the future

【5】The way to go back to last ice age is to ________.

    A.get into the forest

B.drill deep down into lake sediments

    C.find some lake mud

    D.look at fossilized pollen

【6】We may infer from the last paragraph that ________.

A.it’s possible to enter the Amazon through rivers to get enough information

B.so far, scientists have collected some information from the samples

C.it’s necessary to use helicopters for the research

D.there’s little information to study the past climate
