Earth Day is April 22.But on all other days,we must also remember it.The water we use is the most important natural resource(自然资源)on the earth.
Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface(表面).But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for many things.Fresh water covers only 1% of the earth’s surface.
You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s.But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty.Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish,too.Now,34% of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty?First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty.Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨),is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.

● You can easily cut your 10-minute showers(沐浴)in half—and you’ll be just as clean.

One of the world’s most dangerous sports is mountain climbing, and one of the most popular places for this is the Himalayas. The Himalayas run along the southwestern part of China. And at 8,844.43 meters high, Mount Qomolangma is the tallest mountain of the Himalayas as well as on the Earth. While it is famous for its beautiful views, parts of the mountain are facing a problem: rubbish. Every year, visitors and climbers throw away tons of rubbish, such as bottles and plastic bags.
According to the UN, over 140 tons of rubbish has been left on the mountain. To reduce rubbish, China is limiting (限制) the number of people who are allowed to climb up the north side of the mountain. Only 300 people will be allowed to climb it, and only during spring.
People cleaned the mountain last year, removing rubbish at a height of 5,200 meters. They collected about 8.4 metric tons (公吨) of rubbish.
This year, the local government plans to spend 4 million yuan on a new clean-up activity. The local government is also setting up stations to sort (分类), recycle and break down rubbish collected from the mountain. A group of artists will also try to turn the rubbish into art works. 23、 There are at least 3,000 miles (about 4,828 km) of waterways in Britain. On these canals (运河) and rivers, there are over 30,000 "houseboats"--boats that people use as homes. Around 10,000 of them are located in London.
Houseboat communities are made up of people who are looking for a slower way of life and who want to be in touch with nature.
Living on the water sounds romantic (浪漫的), but it is also hard work. There are daily things that need to be done, like bringing fuel (燃料) and water on board and dealing with "waste" water from the kitchen sink, shower and toilet. In winter, living on a boat can be very cold and there is always a feeling of being damp(潮湿的). Of course, most boats are quite small inside, so you don't have much space, especially if you are a couple, family or group of friends.
However, the number of people living on Britain's waterways has increased by around 50 percent over the past ten years. This is not only because they like the idea of life on water but also because it is much cheaper to buy or rent (租) a boat than a flat or a house.
There is a great sense of community on the waterways. Houseboat neighbours often become friends for life. This is quite a different story from people who live in flats or houses and may hardly know the people next door at all.
【1】What can we know about houseboats in Britain from the passage?
A. There are about 40,000 houseboats in total. B. They are boats that are used as homes.
C. They are houses in the shape of boats. D. They are designed for traveling on water.
【2】Why do people live in houseboats?
A. They want to get away from nature. B. They need to make a living by fishing.
C. They prefer a slower way of life. D. They enjoy living an faster life on water.
【3】What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about?
A. The best season to live on a boat. B. Tips for living on a houseboat.
C. The costs of living on water. D. The difficulties of living on the water.
【4】Why are more people choosing to live on waterways?
A. Because it costs less than living in a house or flat.
B. Because the government is promoting (推进) this idea.
C. Because they are afraid of living in cities.
D. Because it provides a bad sense of community
