21、Dawn Loggins, a homeless girl from Burns High School, is going to Harvard University in the fall.
Dawn grew up in a poor situation. Her house had no electricity or running water. So she had to do her homework in the dark. She lived with her parents who took drugs.
One summer, Dawn left home for a one-month program in North Carolina for outstanding high school students. When she came back, she found her house empty, with a government notice on the front door. Her parents had left already and Dawn became homeless.
After learning that, teachers helped her in any way they could. Sheryl Kolton, a bus driver at Bums, even let Dawn live at her house.
Dawn didn’t let her situation stop her drive to be successful. As a high school student, she joined in different school activities at Bums: band club, photography club and cross-country club. In her spare time, she gave out newspapers and did some other part-time jobs to make extra money. At the same time, she got A’s in all subjects.
“When I was younger, I was able to look at all the terrible situations, and made a decision for myself that I was not going to end up like my parents,” Dawn said.
Dawn applied (申请) to four North Carolina universities and her dream one, Harvard. In March this year, she got a reply from Harvard. It said that she was not only admitted to the university, but also offered a full scholarship (奖学金).
Dawn’s story has gone around the world. People have sent best wishes and money to her. 23、 Volunteers are probably some of the most overlooked(被忽视的) people. But no activities can carry on smoothly without hardworking volunteers. Last month, I volunteered at the Color Run in Melbourne, Australia. Although I didn’t have so much fun as the runners, I still learned a valuable lesson.
My job was to give a high-five(击掌) to every runner at the finish line. At the beginning, I saw it as a simple task. When the first runner passed, I reached out my hands and shouted “Good job!” excitedly. However, as more and more people crossed the finish line and clapped their hands with mine, my arms got sore. To make things worse, it became hotter. My clothes were wet because of the sweat(汗水), and I felt really tired. But soon I saw a group of children running towards me. They were about 6 years old. Although they hardly catch their breath, they still kept going with big smiles on their faces. They put up their hands and said loudly, “High-five!”
At that moment, I was quite touched. They were so young, and they refused to give up. Suddenly, I felt myself be full of strength(力量). I clapped their hands, “Well done, little guys!”
That is the meaning of being a volunteer. It is never an easy job. However, we meet different people and see the spirit that touches us. Although such spirit is not often found in daily life, it can help us learn a lot when we see it by accident.
