21、 As a boy, Robert Ballard liked to read about wrecks (沉船) . He read a lot about the Titanic. “My lifelong dream was to find this great ship,” he once said.

In 1986, Ballard visited the Titanic again. This time, he got to see the inside of the ship and took a lot of photos with the help of underwater cameras. When other people saw the photos, they wanted to visit the ship, too.
When Ballard returned in 2004, he found the Titanic in a very bad state. Other people had taken away about 6,000 things from the ship. Some even took pieces of the ship. 22、I will never forget the tenth summer of childhood with my grandfather in western Norway on the mountain farm where my mother was born. As a boy, I always thought people simply bought whatever they need. Whether Grandfather know this, I didn’t know. One day he said, “Come, I have something for you. ’’
I followed him to a workroom. “You should have a toy boat. You can sail it at Storvassdal,” he said. “Great,” I thought, looking around for the boat. But there was none.
Grandfather pointed to a block of wood. “The boat is there,” he said. Then he handed me some tools and showed me how to use them properly. “It’ll be a fine boat, and you’ll make it with your own hands,” he said, “No one can give you what you do for yourself.” The words rang in my head as I worked. The boat was finished. It wasn’t much to look at, but I was proud. Then I sailed it at Storvassdal.
We had to return to America. “You cannot bring that boat home with you,” my mother said. We had too much baggage. Feeling sad, I hid my boat under a big rock at Storvassdal.
I said good-bye to Grandfather, not knowing I would never see him again.
In 1964, I went to Storvassdal with my parents and my wife and children. To my surprise, for 34 years my treasure stayed here, waiting for my return. I felt we three were together again although my grandfather had died 22 years before.
I carved(雕刻) “1930” and “1964” on its side and put it back.
I returned to the lake in 1968,1971,1977 and 1988. Each time I had the boat and carved the year, my grandfather seemed near.
My last trip to Storvassdal was in 1991. I brought my granddaughters: Catherine, 13; Claire, 12. I hoped they would understand the importance of the little boat and its simple message. At Storvassdal, Claire said softly, “Grandpa, someday I’ll come back.” She added, “And I’ll bring my children.”

23、My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around our neighbourhood. Two dog walkers passed by and one of them said, “Never seen that dog around here before.”
We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the hill. We bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar. There was a phone number on it, but no one answered.
The dog was really thin. It didn’t have many teeth left.
Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with me. Julie got home and back again when I was only half way there. So, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend ate its food.
Finally we got it home. We gave it a blanket, more food and wondered what to do next.
After trying for many times, we got a reply from the number. A lady came. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. It was very old and should probably be put to sleep, but the lady just couldn’t bring herself to do it. So, Tara was safely returned home.
Here is the truth of the story:
In fact, Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I still didn’t find it possible. I was going to turn and go when an old, weak dog walked between us and collapsed. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it. And here am I writing the story in my own home. In the song “Love Is Not a Fight”, Warren Barfield talks about marriage. He sings, “And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door.”
Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.

All the hotels we lived in were good. My favorite one was the Puka Park Lodge. It was on a hill above a beach and there were trees everywhere. We woke up and listened to the birds singing.
