If only I had followed Mom’s advice
The major theme of my summer this year has been “going back home”. I went back to China as soon as school was over, at the end of June. I returned to Canada on August 17.
Going back to China this summer was not easy, because of the A (H1N1) flu. Everybody seemed to be terrified. The easiest thing to do was to wear masks on the plane, as my mom suggested. However, it was difficult to wear a mask for 10 hours. The idea was more horrifying than catching the flu! In the end I decided I’d take the masks onto the plane, but not wear them.
Everything seemed okay during the flight. I saw only five people were wearing masks all the time. “Comfort is always the first thing,” I said to myself. When we arrived in Beijing some people came on the plane and took our temperature. Fortunately, nobody had a fever. Therefore, I was able to get home on time.
Unluckily, everything went wrong after I got home. I became sick, with a sore throat and a fever. The horrible image of the flu suddenly hovered in front of me, laughing at me, calling me an ill-behaved child because I had not followed my mom’s words. Luckily, I just had a common cold; probably it was due to the stale air inside the plane cabin. While I was sick in bed, I sighed sadly. If I had listened to my mom in the first place, I probably would have never caught the cold.
It’s always wise to listen to your mom’s suggestions.

22、 What can be both red or green, round or sharp, big or small, and more importantly, loved or hated by someone?Yes, the answer is chilies. Humans are the only animals to eat Chilies, even though they sometimes cause us discomfort.
About 600 million of Chinese, almost half of the national population, are chili eaters. However, did you know that this spicy (辣的)vegetable could put you in danger?A 34-year-old US man recently ended up in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper, the spiciest chili people have known so far. After taking just a single bite of one, the man suffered from serious headaches in the following days, reported BBC News.
It is a fact that eating spicy food causes stomachache and headache. But if chilies are truly harmful, why do people like to eat this vegetable? So what makes people love chilies so much? The secret lies in a natural chemical reaction within human bodies. After eating chilies, the human body reacts to some natural chemicals that produce “a sense of happiness”, noted BBC News.
What’s more, chilies do good to people in another way. Scientists found that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The death rate is 14 percent lower for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. This encourages people to eat more spicy food to improve health and bring less death risk at an early age So, don’t worry if you love spicy food.It seems that chilies are actually good for us.

24、 It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers(祖先) had lived in the same way for centuries.
Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.
This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn't last long.
No one noticed the change at first, but it seemed to be more insects around recently. So they had to use the money they made to buy pesticides(杀虫剂)and medicines. Soon there was no money left.
The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.
Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't been useless. They had been doing an important job-eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading(传播) diseases.
