  • 22、   Qin Tian, 26, returned from Britain to her hometown of Xiangyang, Hubei Province, for the Spring Festival. And she stayed to help in the fight against COVID19.

Since January 24, she has collected and given out aid(救援物资) with many volunteers. Between January and March, the most difficult time for medical workers, Qin wore plastic bags so that she could work for 10 hours.

Every morning, Qin helped distribute aid to hospitals, communities and the people in need. In the afternoon she communicated with people to get the latest information about the need. Sometimes, Qin and her father took turns driving the family car to bring aid from another city. They needed to drive for about eight hours for a round trip. It was often 11 p.m. or 4 a.m. when the aid arrived. After arriving, Qin would then help unload() the aid. She took a rest in the office for four or five hours a day, with scabs() on her shoulders. The scabs were from unloading the aid.

Nowadays, everything returns to normal. She hands out daily necessary things to poor people. Those people thank her a lot.

Qin's idea for volunteer work came from her mother. When she was in junior high school, her mother took her to many places to offer some help.

“The experience touched me a lot. I used to complain(抱怨) about life, such as the strict rules from my parents, but after learning many people were still living in difficulty, I realized that what I should do is to help those in need. • 23、   My mother is a teacher, and I grew up with the challenges a teacher faces. I often asked her,” Why do you teach? What keeps you teaching? "The answer was always the same." There is always that one child, that one moment that is worth it.”

Now, I am a teacher, too. But different from my mother, I teach students challenging activities outdoors. And when my mother asked me the similar questions, my answer was, "It's that one child, that one special moment.”

One of those moments happened recently. I was working with a group of girls in a four-week programme. Everything went on well through the "Team" events and we were moving on to a "High" one called the Wire(钢索)Walk. In the Wire Walk, each girl had to climb up the pegs(木桩)in a tree to a wire, 8 meters high, and then walk across it. Of course, everything was safe for sure. When I asked who would try, a few girls raised their hands, and they finished the Wire Walk with little difficulty.

But when it was Susie’s turn, it seemed that she didn’t really want to. I asked Susie if she was ready. She Answered softly, “I suppose.”

Now, Susie was at the foot of the tree. She started to make the long reach for the first peg. The other girls cheered for her. Then I found Susie was becoming nervous with every step. I realized she would not go much further.

Susie was halfway up. Then she stopped and held the tree tight, looking very afraid. Her eyes were closed. With her face against the tree, she cried, “I can’t.”

The other girls sat in silence. I talked quietly to Susie, trying to relax her. I talked for a long time till I ran out of words.

“I will still be your friend no matter what, Susie!" Mary broke the silence.

To my surprise, Susie lifted her head and looked up to the wire. Then she turned to look down at Mary and smiled. Mary smiled back.

Finally, Susie made it all the way across that wire. When she returned to the ground, the first hug she looked for was from Mary. We all cheered.

Moments like this keep me doing what I do. The young hearts continue to fill me with courage.

1Susie stopped halfway up to the wire because ________.

A.the teacher asked her to do it. B.something was wrong with it

2Mary broke the silence in order to ________.

  • 24、   From deserts and beaches to playgrounds, sand is a common sight. But you might not know that sand is also a useful resources(资源).

Sand is the second most –used resource in the world after water, the BBC reported. However, the UN said that sand is not limitless and that we might be running out of it.

Sand is made up of very small pieces of rock, soil and minerals(矿物质). It can take tens of thousands of years to form(形成). But now we are using sand more quickly than it is being formed. According to the BBC, we use about 15 million tons of sand every year to build houses, roads and other things. That’s enough to build a 20-meter-high by 20-meter-wide wall around the equator(赤道)every year.

People also put sand in the sea to make new islands. Singapore, for example, is now 20 percent bigger than it was in 1965. Palm islands are three large man-made islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. They took 94 million cubic meters of sand to build.

If people keep using this much sand, it will run out in many places. For example, Vietnam may run out of construction(建造)sand by 2020, Live Science noted.

Since people need so much sand, they are trying to mine(开采)more of it. But this is bad for the environment. Mining sand may cause beaches to disappear and more floods to happen in places close to the sea. Also, this may affect the habitats(栖息地)of many plants and animals.

1Sand is ____________ most used resource in the world.

    A.the first B.the second C.the twentieth D.the ninety-fourth

    2Palm islands are in ____________.

    A.America B.Vietnam C.United Arab Emirates D.Singapore

    3Mining sand can cause ____________.

A.Vietnam to disappear B.sand to be more common

C.environment to be better D.more floods to happen

4Why do people mine much construction sand? Because ____________.

A.they want to build buildings B.they can find more of them

C.sand is limitless D.sand can form quickly

5The writer of the passage mainly tells us _____________.

A.people use sand to make islands B.many places will disappear

C.the world is running out of sand D.there is much sand around the world
