二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The habit of reading is one of the greatest resources of mankind, and we enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than the ones that are borrowed.

A borrowed book is like a guest in the house and should be treated with care and considerate formality. You must see that it keeps no dirty or destroyed pages. You cannot mark it and you cannot use it as you like.1 If it is a distinguished guest, it really makes you feel empty when he or she leaves.

However, your own books belong to you. Books are for use, not for show. You should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid to place on the table, wide open and face down. Private ownership also encourages meaningful marking.

2This practice enables you to remember more easily the significant sayings, and to refer to them quickly and then review them more frequently in the future.

One should have one's own bookshelves, which should not have doors, glass windows or keys.3 What's more, the best wallpaper is books, which are more varied in color and appearance than any other wallpaper. They are more attractive in design and if you sit alone in the room, you are surrounded with close friends.

4 How could it be? Books are of the people, by the people and for the people. They are part of history and the best part of personality. Book-friends have this advantage over living friends. The living friends are usually almost unreachable and we also can’t always see our personal friends. But in a private library, you can at any moment talk with Shakespeare or Dumas or Dickens.5 Instead of seeing them masked, your look into their innermost heart of heart.

A.Books are the ladder of human progress.

B.Marking instructive passages in books is a good habit.

C.And then, you really ought to return a borrowed book someday.

D.They should be free and accessible to the hand as well as to the eyes.

E.Out devotion to reading has never made us a person who lives alone.

F.There is no doubt that in these books you see these great men at their best.

G.You can do your ultimate best to entertain yourself as an audience or an actor.

  • 22、   Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the poet, publisher, painter, social activist and bookstore owner, has been San Francisco’ honored poet. He turns 100 this month, and the city is making preparations to celebrate him in style. Readings and performances and an open house will take place at City Lights, the sacred bookstore he co-founded in 1953.

On March 24, 1919, Lawrence Felinghetti was born in Yonkers, New York. After spending his early childhood in France, he received his BA from the University of North Carolina, an MA from Columbia University, and a PhD from the Sorbonne.

He is the author of more than thirty books of poetry, including Poetry as Insurgent Art; A Coney Island of Mind. He has translated the works of a number of poets, including Nicanor Parra, Jacques Prevert, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In addition to poetry, he is also the author of more than eight plays and three novels. Including Little Boy: A Novel, Love in the Days of Rage and Her.

In 1953, Ferlinghetti and Peter Martin opened the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco, California. It became a nerve center for the Beats and other writers. Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and other writers from that era were Easterners who dropped into San Francisco for a spell. In 2001 it was made an official historic landmark. Now City Lights is almost certainly the best bookstore in the United States. It’s filled with serious world literature of all kinds.

If City Lights is a San Francisco institution, Ferlinghetti himself is as much of one. He has loomed over the city’s literary life. As a poet, he’s never been a critical favorite. But his flexible and plain-spoken and often powerful work — he has published more than 50 volumes — has found a wide audience. His collection “A Coney Island of the Mind” has sold more than 1 million copies, making it one of the best-selling American poetry books ever published.

1What can we learn about Ferlinghetti from Paragraph 2?

A.He had a happy childhood. B.He received normal education.

C.He had a gift for writing novels. D.He had written lots of poetry.

2Which of the following best describes Ferlinghetti according to Paragraph 3?

    A.Flexible. B.Optimistic. C.Outspoken. D.Productive

3What does a nerve center in the 4th paragraph probably mean

A.a nervous center B.a new spot C.a control center D.a popular spot

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To speak highly of a great poet. B.To introduce some English poetry.

C.To promote values of City Lights. D.To celebrate the birthday of Ferlinghetti.

  • 23、E-scooters are an increasingly common site on Britain’s roads and pavements. With an electric motor attached, they have become the go-to vehicle of unruly teenagers everywhere.

But here are two things that might surprise you: First, Even though they’re quite clearly being used by thousands of people, because of the way the law is written, e-scooters cannot use the pavements and cycle lanes, because they have a motor. But they can’t use the roads as motor vehicles either, because they are not properly licensed or taxed. And the second thing: I think they are brilliant. Because energy density and efficiency has improved, it has made it possible to strap a battery onto a scooter, and actually have it carry you far enough to be useful.

I’m enthusiastic about scooters because I think they’re like a Swiss Army Knife, and can help solve multiple problems in society. They’re much greener than cars, which is great for the environment. They’re much smaller too, so take up less space on the road. They could even help ease Britain’s ongoing housing crisis. Because e-scooters could expand the distance in which it is reasonable to commute, making more housing accessible to the people who need it. And from a less high-minded perspective, it’s impossible to deny that they’re huge fun to ride.

In 2020, the government authorized local authorities to permit trials of rental scooter schemes around the country. The scooters are operated by a range of providers, and can be picked up off the street by scanning a QR-code with an app. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Scooter users are already annoying — so wouldn’t legalizing them make them even worse? I’m not convinced. If e-scooters were legalized, they could be properly licensed and regulated. I also think if privately owned scooters were allowed, it would also incentivize good behavior, as scooter owners rather than renters would be more likely to, for example, own a helmet and take good care of their own equipment.

There is some good news for the sceptics though. At the end of last year, the government scooted the question of legalization into the long grass, announcing that instead of making a decision, the regional trials would be extended until November. So, my dream of an e-scooter utopia might have to wait for a bit longer.

【1】Which of the following may be out of our expectation?

A.E-scooters are common on Britain’s roads.

B.E-scooters cannot be used everywhere legally.

C.The practical value of e-scooters is limited.

D.People prefer riding an e-scooter to using a car.

【2】Why do e-scoters have a positive effect on the housing crisis in Britain?

A.More houses are acceptable to more people.

B.E-scooters are great for the housing environment.

C.E-scooters take up less space in houses.

D.It’s huge fun to ride an e-scooter in the house.

【3】What does the underlined word “incentivize” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Encourage.

    B.Maintain.

    C.Restrict.

    D.Praise.

【4】What is the government’s attitude towards legalization of e-scooters?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Cautious.

    C.Opposed.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 24、A new study finds that experimenting with skipping one meal each day enables your cells to recharge and use all the available fuel, which ensures insulin (胰岛素) function remains at its peak the next morning.

The research found that body weight, measured by body mass index (BMI 体重指数), corresponds with when we eat and how often we eat. Specifically, people who eat larger breakfasts and adopt an 18-hour overnight fast (禁食), say from 1 pm to 7 am, have the lowest body weights. Those who ate more than three meals, or three meals plus snacks, had higher BMIs. Those who ate later in the day, after 6 pm, compared to those having the largest meal at breakfast or lunch, had higher body weights.

The Loma Linda University researchers assume that 18-hour overnight dietary fasts reboot our metabolisms to help our bodies burn calories efficiently. Lead author Dr Hana Kahleova, director of clinical research at the nonprofit Physicians Committee, says this process ensures that our energy intake is related to energy output, instead of energy reserves. Contrary to popular belief, these extended overnight fasts seem to help boost metabolic function. Kahleova also finds

meals consumed in the evening, compared to those eaten in the morning, result in raised blood sugar. Like a clog (障碍) in a machine, extra glucose (葡萄糖) slows our bodies’ metabolic process down.

What does this mean to you? Let’s say you consume 1,500 to 1,800 calories a day. Instead of splitting 500 to 600 calories evenly at each meal, you could experiment with eating 600 to 700 calories for breakfast, 600 to 700 calories for lunch and 300 to 400 calorie for a light dinner. A more moderate application of this research may be to have big brunches or breakfasts instead of holiday dinners and evening birthday parties to support long-term weight maintenance.

【1】What makes for the lowest BMIs according to the research?

A.Eating three meals evenly on a regular basis.

B.Having a larger portion of breakfast plus snacks.

C.Starting an 18-hour overnight fast after a big breakfast.

D.Skipping breakfast and eating more at lunch and dinner.

【2】What will Dr Hana Kahleova probably agree?

A.Overnight fasts boost metabolism to lose weight efficiently.

B.The finding of the study is consistent with the common belief.

C.The process breaks the balance of energy intake and energy output.

D.Breakfast is more likely to increase blood sugar compared to dinner.

【3】What can we learn from the research?

A.We should adopt the fasting approach to the maximum.

B.We can continue holiday dinners and evening birthday parties.

C.It’s worse to eat low-calorie meals and work out in the morning.

D.It’s better to rearrange meals and consume more calories in the morning.

【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.The Way Human Energy Systems Operate

B.Can Skipping Dinner Help You Lose Weight?

C.Can Fasts Slow Down Your Bodies’ Metabolic Process?

D.The importance Of Maintaining A Healthy Body Weight

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was August. We were on vacation, just my six-year-old son Kevin and I, for my husband was always busy. Having driven from our home in the city to a remote and peaceful place, we wouldn’t see friends or family—it would be a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We had hiked about half mile to an attractive spot called Diana’s Baths, which afforded visitors an expanse of transparent water. The water flows and then falls off a series of big flat stones, making itself a small waterfall, about 7 inches high.

Several couples and their kids in swimsuits were playing to their heart’s content in the water. We joined them. I watched as some younger parents nervously drove their babies away from the stones edges. Fast-moving water made standing there quite dangerous, for I saw a certain kid with curly hair missed a step and almost fell down. The air was full of shouts and laughter. I felt so lucky that I didn’t always need to fix my eyes on my son. Kevin could navigate his physical space with more confidence and care. But I was still terrified when I saw Kevin jump between the slippery rocks.

But with the passing of time, I soon relaxed, and we were both having fun, my kid splashing and kicking in the cool water, laughing heartily as I put my head under the cold running water.

Then seconds later, every fear I’d ever had rose to the surface. I lifted my head, turned and saw Kevin sitting between two stones, with the rushing water flowing around him. I could see he was shaking sometimes because of the water rapids. I yelled at him to get out. He yelled back something that I couldn’t hear.
