24、
Have you ever heard of FOGO? It is short for “fear of going out.” This buzzword(流行语) is often used to describe social anxiety(焦虑), a problem that some young people are facing.
Sometimes, FOGO can cause us trouble. Recently something happened to a friend of mine. Last Friday, my friend Amy took the subway to go home. The subway was very crowded. When she tried to exit at her stop, my friend found that the door was blocked by other passengers. She was too shy to say “Excuse me.” Instead, she kept waiting until the people in front of her had all gotten off. It ended up taking her two more hours than it usually does to get home. It usually takes her about 40 minutes.
Some people, like my friend, believe that silence is golden. Many times they believe that, by saying nothing, they can avoid making mistakes and therefore they won’t lose face or face any criticism(指责). However, some people around them may see it as a sign of arrogance(傲慢). Anyway, we must say “no” to FOGO.
It isn’t easy to say “no” to FOGO though. We need practice. First, it can make a big difference to tell yourself that you can do it. Also, always pay more attention to what you are doing than what others might say about you. Meanwhile, you need to be brave enough to ask others for help when you do need help.
Throughout our journey in life, we will meet many different people. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. Having the courage to get socialized with people helps you make friends. Your life will be different if you do not have FOGO.

A.The Buzzword FOGO

25、Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry.” This phrase has become such a common response(反应)that it has taken on a lot of meanings.
Saying “Sorry” means apologizing(道歉).This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.
But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man knocks into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry; because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.
It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy fight. So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.
Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter, “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, “Sorry” doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.

26、Yawning (打哈欠) is something we all do— maybe because we’re bored carrying out boring tasks or because we’re tired. Sometimes, just seeing other people yawn can set you off.
Many of us think we open our mouths when we yawn to take in more air, but in fact there is no clear connection. A new research suggests it might be because yawning lower the temperature of the brain and prevents it from overheating, much like the fan in your computer. This might be why we’re more likely to feel sleepy and yawn in warm temperatures.
We yawn more when we’re tired and ready for a sleep, and we can’t control when we do it! But it’s also true that yawning is a very contagious behaviour. John Drury, a researcher from Sussex University, told the BBC that “it’s something that you can’t stop. Dogs yawn when their owners yawn, and animals yawn to each other. It happens whether you want to or not.”
His research into this behaviour showed that there is a connection with our social group and how close we are to the people in it. If we are closely connected with the person who has the behaviour, we are likely to copy it too.
Another research by the University of Nottingham found similar results. Researchers found people hardly avoided yawning when others around them yawned. They also found, when using electrical stimulation(刺激), that they were able to increase people’s wish to yawn. These findings could be useful because they could help treat other conditions like Tourette’s(图雷特氏综合症).

It is said that as the population of a city grows, so do its problems. Pollution, too many cars, and crowded streets are just a few of the problems. One way to deal with these problems is city trains. Traveling to different parts of a city by train means fewer cars and buses on our roads, cleaner air and more open streets. In recent years, cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai have all built city train lines.
The first city train line in China was built in Beijing. The oldest part of the train line, from Beijing Zhan to Ping Guo Yuan was opened in 1969. Its length was 23.6 kilometers. With the development of the city after 1980, more trains are needed. A new train line was built to help move people around the city center. The 16-kilometer-long “circle line” was finished in 1987. Since that time even more train stations have been built and today the train lines in the city are over 50 kilometers long.
