24、 What do you know about failure?(失败) In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The Spider Story is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave form the English. He watched a spider spinning a web (结网). The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times and six times, he failed. On the seventh time, he made it and went on to spine his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat (击败) the English. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he failed so often. He replied, “Failure? I have no failure. Now I know 50,000 ways that won’t work.”
The first thing to remember is that nobody can succeed every time. So take it as a common thing. You can’t win them all. Second, always think about your failure. What’s the reason of it? What can you change so that things will go right next time? Third is keep trying and don’t give up. That is the secret of success.

25、
Each year, Lunar New Year is symbolised by one of 12 zodiac animals.
This is based on a story about the Jade Emperor trying to find a way to measure time. He told the animals they were to compete in a race. The first 12 animals to complete the race would be rewarded by having a year named after them. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. The last time there was Year of the Rabbit was in 2011. The next one will not be until 2035.
In the story of the Jade Emperor, the rabbit was the fourth animal to complete the race. The rabbit was so confident that he would win that he took a nap allowing three other animals to arrive before him.
In traditional Chinese Culture. Rabbits are quiet and agile(敏捷的), which suits traditional Chinese aesthetic(审美的) values of being gentle and cultivated(有教养的).There is a view in Chinese culture that rabbits are smart and gentle. This is shown by the phrase “dongrutuotu”, a Chinese idiom used to describe people who are as smart and agile as rabbits. So it is believed that people who were born in the year of the rabbit would have the characteristics including being kind, agile, quiet and responsible.
There is also a Legend about a Jade Rabbit living on the moon which is the pet of Chang’e, a goddess widely known in China. This can explain why rabbits are regarded as an auspicious(吉祥的) sign.
In addition, in ancient China, people generally believed that the more children you have, the luckier and happier you will be. This belief makes the rabbit a popular symbol of good luck and fortune, because the rabbit is naturally full of vitality(活力) and fertility(生育能力).
So, now it’s the rabbit’s turn. Maybe the Year of the Rabbit can bring you good luck!

B.The person who has characteristics of being quick, gentle and responsible.
C.The person who likes the rabbit as his/her pet.
【4】Why do Chinese people think the rabbit is the symbol of luck and wealth?
A.Because the rabbit is very popular with Chinese people.
B.Because many Chinses people regard the rabbit as an auspicious(吉祥的)sign.

26、 A hunter(猎人)once lost his way deep inside the jungle while chasing a deer. As hard as he tried, he could not find a way out of the jungle, nor could he find any food to eat. He started feeling so hungry that he could eat an elephant in one go. Disappointed, he lost all hope. And that was exactly when an apple tree caught his sight. He collected some apples to feed him for the rest of his search.
As he ate the first apple, he felt grateful for finding the tree. He thanked the jungle. He could not believe his luck when he ate the first apple, but he was less grateful while eating the second apple and even less grateful after eating the fifth apple. Somehow, with each passing apple, his hunger refused to go away and he became less happy. He couldn't enjoy his tenth apple at all.
Why? He had already taken for granted the gift of having found an apple tree in the middle of a forest. When he took the tenth apple in his hand, he was still very hungry, but he just did not feel like eating any more. Economics(经济学) calls this diminishing marginal utility(边际效用递减). I like to call it diminishing gratitude(感恩递减), or in simpler words, taking things for granted. Or let's just call it the tenth apple effect(效应).
The tenth apple did not lack flavor (味道), nor was it unable to end the man's hunger. The only thing lacking was his gratitude for finding food in the middle of the jungle.
【1】What happened to the hunter in the jungle?
A.He was driven into the jungle by a deer.

A.Feeling grateful for unexpected gifts.
B.Not being grateful for what you get.
C.Happiness goes away as time goes on.
D.The more things you find, the less useful they are.
【4】What did the writer say about the last apple?
A.It was not as delicious as the other apples.
B.It was unable to end the man's hunger.
C.The man didn't want to throw it away.
D.The man lacked gratitude for the tenth apple.
27、After several exams, I believe that most of you have different understanding about your own study. Here I want to show you a tool which can help you analyze (分析)your study. It is SWOT analyzing method. Maybe you are not familiar with it, but don’t worry. I will give you an introduction. “S” means strengths, the things you are good at. “W” is short for weakness, your weak points. “O” stands for opportunities, which means all the things can help you except yourselves. “T” represents threats (威胁) the things stop you from improving. Now I will give you an example-the SWOT of John.
Strengths Physics is easy for me. I usually communicate with my teachers. I volunteer to answer questions in the class. Math is my favorite, I usually got better grades than any other subject in the exam. | Weakness History is a disaster for me. Chinese is nor that bad, but sometimes I can understand the passage well. I always feel tired and sleepy and I don’t like exercise. Laziness stops me asking teachers questions after class.
|
Opportunities Teachers prepare a lot of materials for us to review. There are one more PE classes in a week from April. These four classes force me to exercise more. All my classmates are working hard. The atmosphere makes me focus on the study. | Threats Video games and the smart phone always attract my attention. Relationship between me and my friends sometimes troubles me. What’s the worst, TIME IS LIMITED!!!!!!
|
This sheet is an example for you. Maybe this method can’t solve all your problems, but I hope you can have a try to analyze your study with this method of thinking. If you have more questions, you can ask me after class, or you can e-mail your problem and I will check as soon as possible.
