  • 22、It is natural for young people to worship cool and good-looking young “idols”(偶像). We spend a lot of time caring about them-even more time than we spend on our studies. We often wonder: What makes them so popular? What could I do to be cool like them?

Well, guess what? Many of your idols are only made to “look” cool. If you could see into their real lives, you would find these stars aren’t so bright. Their beauty is only skin-deep. Some of them might not be as honest, kind or hard-working as you are!

When I was a teenager, I, along with most of my classmates, had worshipped pop idols, too. Then, one day, I discovered Leonard Cohen and Neil Young. They were ordinary-looking(相貌平凡的)people who played the guitar while sitting on a stool. They had no screaming (尖叫的)fans. They didn’t need fancy clothes because their songs were great and meaningful. They told the truth: Life is hard and the road you take might sometimes be lonely.

Modern “idol culture” often sends the wrong message that . But the best actors, the top sports stars and the greatest scientists all have scars (伤疤)from the stress of dealing with life’s difficulties.

Idols can serve as important role models in our lives, so it’s very important to choose the right ones. We should celebrate people who teach us important values that can lead us on the road ahead. The next time you see some pretty, popular “stars”, ask yourself: Do I really need these people in my life?

【1】What is the major purpose (目的) of paragraph 1? ________

    A.To make the readers worried.

B.To lead in the topic of the passage.

    C.To ask some questions.

    D.To attract the readers’ attention.

【2】Why did the writer mention Leonard Cohen and Neil Young in the passage? ________

A.To introduce his idols to readers.

B.To show they are also idols with a lot of fans.

C.To show the differences between them and pop idols.

D.To encourage the readers to listen to their music.

【3】Which of the following can be best put in in Para.4? ________

A.there are always difficulties in life.

B.life is always easy and fun.

C.people should try to deal with stress.

    D.being popular is not important.

    【4】The overall tone(总基调)of the reading is   ________.

    A.personal and negative

    B.personal and scientific

    C.informative but sad

    D.critical but positive

  • 23、The idea of “time banks” was created by Yale University Professor Edgar Cahn in 1980 as a way to encourage volunteerism (志愿服务). It’s simple enough. People who volunteer to help others in their communities (社区) get “time dollars” or “time coins”—that can be exchanged (交换) in later life if they need help. It has taken effect in Britain, Japan, Sweden and other countries. And so, too, in China.

The idea of “time banks” was introduced in China in the 1990s, and Shanghai was one of its first users. However, being short of clear rules, volunteers and good management, the project finally failed. Recently, the idea has become popular once more because of China’s rapidly aging population.

The Chinese version mostly hopes to encourage younger senior people to provide services for the older ones. I’m happy to help them before I become too old to look after myself, said Yang Beifen, 68, a community volunteer in Shanghai. I’ve collected over 10 coins now, and it’s comforting to know that I can use them if I need to in the future.

The idea of “time banks” is one way to deal with the problem of an aging population. By the end of last year, there were more than 5.2 million people aged 60 or older in Shanghai. Of these people, about 30 percent were aged below 64 and 16 percent were over 80. Many young people are too busy to care for the elderly, so the elderly have to help each other. The Bank of China even developed a WeChat mini program to help the elderly.

However, the needs of the elderly are a great challenge for the city. There’s a long way to go.

【1】What do we know about the idea of “time banks”?

    A.It’s popular only in Europe.

B.It was created by a Chinese teacher.

C.It’s kind of difficult to understand.

D.It’s a form of saving for the future.

【2】Which is NOT the reason for “time banks” failure in China in the 1990s?

    A.The management was poor.

    B.There were not clear rules.

C.People didn’t have much money at that time.

D.There were not enough people who would like to volunteer.

【3】What is Yang Beifen’s attitude towards the idea of “time banks”?

    A.She is pleased with it.

    B.She is worried about it.

C.She pays no attention to it.

    D.She feels disappointed about it.

【4】According to the last two paragraphs, ________.

A.young people should help each other

B.more work should be done to help the elderly

C.the start of the WeChat mini program wasn’t easy

D.an aging population is a common problem around the world

【5】What is the main purpose of the passage?

    A.To introduce some volunteers.

B.To introduce the history of “time banks”.

C.To give facts about “time banks” in China.

D.To introduce “time banks” to more countries.
